Jonan,

Your environment seems to be similar to mine so I would recommend starting with the first set. Some instructions are also included in POST #1 as to how to proceed.

Enjoy!

1) My TV is in a den, and is not particularly light controlled although the light comes from recessed lighting. There isn't much time during the day that there will be sunlight in the room.
2) The primary uses of the TV will be HD Comcast and movies (some blu-ray, some not). There will be some sports, and some network tv.
3) There will be little to no game use other than a Wii so the Game mode is out.

Who's settings should be the set I start with?

Thanks!

So what can one do from the service menu?

Completely, totally and irrecoverably screw up their TV. Really.

Now let me tell you the really bad thing that can happen.

You could be voiding your warranty. If you screw up the TV and you call Samsung for service there's a very good chance the service person will be able to tell it was because you went into the service menu and they might charge you for the service call. Samsung then may void the rest of your warranty. Whether or not they are allowed to do this is debatable. What isn't in question is how much hassle this will cause you.

If you don't know what you are doing, there is nothing good that you can do in the service menu. JMHO

I'm new to calibrating and just tried AVS HD. If I used it correctly, it only allowed me to calibrate basic settings. When watching animation or HD broadcast, the picture looks fine; but when I watch other movies such as Pirates of the Carribean, At World's End, the pic looks very grainy.

I'll try some of the other sample settings provided in the first post to see if the picture is any better.

when I got into the service menu on my tv I made sure not to change anything but...wow that alot of stuff you can do...but only if you know what you doing...and i was not tempting fate..and screw up my tv

I created this document to help keep track of the settings on my Samsung when I'm calibrating it so I thought I'd put this on here in case anyone will find it helpful. Nothing terribly fancy but I find it useful.

When connecting to a PC, using HDMI, one should hook up the cable to HDMI 1, then edit the name of that input to PC (as was mentioned earlier in this thread). Strange that editing the name to PC clears up the fuzzy text problem, and the colors in standard aren't all that bad.

HDMI black level must be set to Low as well. This makes a big difference in the blacks.

Text is definitely better than the PC rgb input, that tends to introduce screen flicker in certain areas when windows are in a certain position on the screen, even if the screen fine adjustment is tuned to death.

I contacted Samsung about this a while back and they said that you can't download it from their site.

Newbie owner question - Why do you need to connect it to a PC? My plan is to take my cable modem, connect it to a router, and run one LAN cable to the computer an another into the 8500. Can't I pick up the firmware using a direct connection through the router? What reason would I have to connect to the PC? To watch streamed Neflix movies (which I get through the Sony Blu-Ray)? To watch home movie videos I downloaded to my computer?

My 46" 8500 is a dedicated PC monitor, where I do all my scientific analysis.
Much better than any desktop monitor, its on a BDI rosewood and glass stand.
I've got a Marantz integrated amp, speakers, bluray, and I work on a writing desk 4' back eye to screen.

It's the only way to go for any computer work, my desktop monitor days are long gone.

Here are my settings. I've had my 8500 a couple weeks now and out of the box it looked pretty good. I set it to Movie mode and Warm2. I was able to confirm with a Chroma5 meter and Calman software that this was the closest to 65K and the CMS was not too far off. But of course, tweaking can always improve things. Or completely screw it up, which I did a couple of times until I figured out the software. It turns out that if the software thinks it's looking at a 75% color window pattern and you are actually displaying a 100% color full screen pattern, things don't tweak so well.

Mode: Movie
Color Tone: Warm2
Smart LED: On
BL: 6/10 6=dark room, 10=bright room
Contrast: 80/90 80=dark room, 90=bright room
Sharpness: 6
Color: 53
Tint: 50/50
Gamma: -1
Flesh Tone: Off
Edge Enhancement: On
xvYCC: Off

White Balance
WRO: 25
WGO: 25
WBO: 23
WRG: 46
WGG: 25
WBG: 23

RR:26
RG:3

GG:41

BB:30

YG:46
YB:16

CR:31
CG:45

I observed the following:
Contrast and backlight level did not significantly alter the greyscale or color accuracy so adjust those to taste depending on your room lighting. Just be careful about setting the contrast too high, if you do, whites will start taking on a pink tint. If this happens decrease the contrast setting until whites are white again.
xvYCC did affect the color accuracy. All the colors pulled in on the CIE chart when I turned this on so for now I plan to leave this off. I need to understand this feature more before I mess with it again.

The picture is now stunning. I put in The Fifth Element and sat transfixed watching the color and detail that this TV now puts out. Amazing.

As alway, YMMV. I also have calibrated a UN55B6000 and its greyscale also lacked red on the high end (Red Gain setting) so I think boosting WRG to 35-40 and leaving all the others at 25 is probably going to work for a lot of these TV's.
I think it is extremely unlikely that my color space settings would transfer to any other TV. These things are incredibly sensitive to small changes in these settings so I don't recommend altering these unless you have a meter. I post them here just for those want to compare these numbers to their TV. On the other hand, getting these right accounted for the biggest improvement in the quality of the picture. This is probably because the greyscale just isn't that far off in Movie mode using Warm2. BTW, Warm3 measures much too red.

Thanks for posting joeracerx. These settings look great on my set. Greens look deep and I no longer see the sunburn effect on peoples faces.
I'm using Yahoo's posted settings:

Mode: Movie using Warm2 (as of 2/4/2010)

I see a bluish tint when viewing from 6' away and 20 inches from center. Also theres a blooming effect with a bluish glow. It is evident here:

Is the blue tint and glow normal? I know the TV has some blooming and bluish tint when away from center. I just didn't expect bluish blooming or it comes up when only 20 inches from center. Is everyone seeing the same thing or is the blooming here beyond normal and is a defect? Also, if its normal any tips to minimize will be appreciated.

After about 3 months these are my settings that give me the best pq for primarily sd dvds from oppo83
Movie warm 2
backlight-8
con.-87
bright.-47
sharp-40
color-50
tint-50/50
screen size fit
amp
blur-9 judder-2
black tone-dark
gamma- minus1
colorspace
red 39-4-0
green-28-45-19
blue-0-15-33
yellow 53-47-19
cyan 19-48-49
magenta 37-17-39
white balance 25-22-23-41-25-32

Anything i didnt mention is kept off. This is a combination of a lot of different people who posted in this thread and I came to these through trial and error.I use the unpopular dark tone at dark because it seems to give more depth to the picture. If I have a poor dvd transfer I have tried the natural setting however it seems a bit harsh to my eyes.

I think there may be a couple of different "base" settings on this TV from the factory. I notice that several people, such as Yahoo, have their white balance boosted with blue while others such as myself have red boosted. Since your TV looks too blue with Yahoo's blue boosted settings, I suggest you try mine and see if that looks better. If so, you probably have one of the units like mine that needs more red in its greyscale.

Didn't realize theres a base setting of bluish tint...If I adjust Yahoo's settings would it disappear or would it appear white? Is anyone else having this pause-blooming issue? Thank you all - Beginner AV Guy

I am also getting a pretty nasty looking blue tinge on my image. Not all the time, but it seems to show up on whites and grays. With that being said I have NOT calibrated by Color Space & White Balance at all.

I am going to go home and try the settings here starting with Davidjschenk's. His seem to be the most popular on this thread so i figure that's a good basis to start on.

With the exception of this light blue tinge on the screen i must admit this TV is basically perfect in my eyes. I just bought this TV 5 days ago. I have since then watched about 6 BD movies on it and notice that blue tinge more and more. It's beginning to bother me. Hopefully some of the color space and white balance settings here help get rid of it. I'm already on Movie and Warm 2 and it's really strong........

Hello all,

I'm a happy new owner of a 8500 series LED and had some questions. My component list equals.......XBOX 360, PS3 (blueray) non HD Dish reciever and a Sony 5 DVD changer. All components run through a Denon 1910 reciever connected with HDMI cables and then connected to the TV with another HDMI cable. When I watch, play or view anything on the TV it always states that it's running at 60 Htz. At times it might drop to 24 Htz for some of the older DVD's but NEVER does it go above 60 Htz. Now i'm not sure if it's do to my HDMI cables(maybe there of the cheap variety?) or if it's because i have everything running through my Denon reciever but i paid for the 240 Htz i'd like to see something cap that out. Is my set up wrong or am i not using quality cables or what?

And what i'm refering to is when you first fire up a component a small box appears in the upper left hand corner of the TV that read's (more or less) 1080 x 19?? at 60Htz.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks.

PS. Love the TV so far, still playing with the settings using the info collect in this thread. THANKS all for that!

You're probably going to get better information at the owner's forum rather than here in the calibration forum: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...187889&page=55

I think that number means you are either getting a 60hz video signal or a 24hz film signal. Nothing to do with the 240hz LCD panel frequency.

I'll do just that. Thanks again.

Can anybody share their settings for playing games.

I use game mode since this tv is brutal for gaming without game mode due to input lag..

but the good thing is that you can tweak a lot of the settings on game mode.

Please provide your custom settings for gaming since I am having issues getting a decent set together.

Hi Vladmyr,

The TV will always report what your component is feeding it. That is what you saw on the display of the 8500. Ideally, you would want to set all your components to 24Hz output (if available) so the TV does not have the responsibility of doing unnecessary interpolation other than upgrading that source (in this case 24Hz or 60Hz) to 240Hz (provided you turned on the AMP feature and have the Judder control higher than 0). Without the AMP Judder engaged you will not benefit from the 240Hz feature of your TV - that is my understanding. On the other hand, having Judder too high will cause a soap-opera effect on movies and could be something undesirable if you are a purist....

johnbkny,

If you are seeing BLUE TINT on the entire picture equally on bright and dark scenes, then you should play with the COLOR SPACE and drop the BLUE component across all of the colors. If you are seeing the tint only on light/dark scenes, then adust the WHITE BALANCE BLUE/OFFSET or GAIN. If you are seeing the tint on certain colors, you have to tune the corresponding color that is represented in COLOR SPACE (blue component).

This is usually a daunting task if you do not have equipment to confirm the readings so you may end up opting for professional calibration.

Hope this helps.

Try my settings(post 378)I have no blue or green tint and excellent blacks.I realize sets are all different but its worth a shot before you pay for a calibration.
