Spike Video Game Awards

MTVN's Spike TV launched the first Video Game Awards (VGAs) in 2003, and has been delivering exclusive game trailers and performances to gamersas well as a highly-engaged audience to video game and CPG advertisersever since. Last year, 10 million people tuned in to the awards, with 2.3 million in the network's sweet spot demo of males 18-34. But like other big TV awards shows, the VGAs have had to try to evolve into a digital event in a way that doesn't cannibalize TV views.

Our audience is that generation of teens and guys that watch TV with their laptops out, said Jeff Lucas, EVP of ad sales for MTVN (NYSE: VIA) Entertainment. Spike tapped in to that simultaneous viewing trend by live-streaming the entire show for the first time last year. The Burger King-sponsored live feed garnered 195,000 video streamsenough for the fast food company to re-up its investment this yearalbeit with more cameras, more locations and more behind-the-scenes content.

Spike has been promoting Burger King's Watch the VGAs Your Way feed with banners and display ads in the weeks leading up to the show; event presenters will also talk up the live streams on-air when the VGAs go live tonight at 8pm EST/5pm PT.

Multi-platform sponsors: Meanwhile, Mountain Dew has also returned as a digital sponsor. The company is backing the Best Independent Game award, and giving away thousands of free downloads of indie games on platforms like Valve's Steam, in a promo called Dew the Download. Still, Spike managed to get both digital and TV ad revenue from Mountain Dew, as the company also sponsored the Next Great Game Gods, a show about indie developers, which aired on the network last night.

Game publisher buy-in: Then, there are the game trailers. Big publishers like Activision (NSDQ: ATVI), EA and Ubisoft have made the VGAs the primary event for unveiling new games for the coming year. This year, viewers will see 10 trailers from highly-anticipated games like Tron, both on-air and online. In 2008, the exclusive trailer videos garnered over 2.4 million streams within the first week, driving brand awareness and increasing the buzz around games like EA's Fight Night Round 4.

The bottom line: With all the on- and offline ad revenue, the biggest question is whether the VGAs are a money-losing or money-making event for Spike TV. According to executive producer Casey Patterson, it has been a profitable show since its inception, with digital adding new streams of incremental revenue to the bottom line.

I'm glad Uncharted 2 got some well deserved respect. The first one mostly got overlooked.

LOS ANGELES (AP) The cinematic action adventure "Uncharted 2: Among Thieves" nabbed three prizes including game of the year at the Spike TV Video Game Awards.

The PlayStation 3 exclusive was named top game for that console and honored for its graphics at the awards show, which featured appearances from Stevie Wonder, Green Day and Jack Black. Snoop Dogg and The Bravery performed.

Wonder presented the best music game award, won by "The Beatles: Rock Band," and called for more titles accessible to the disabled. Jake Gyllenhaal promoted his movie based on the "Prince of Persia" games, due out next summer.

The show also featured new previews of upcoming titles, including "Medal of Honor," ''Batman: Arkham Asylum 2," ''The Force Unleashed 2" and "Halo Reach."

Best original score should've gone to Hans Zimmer for Modern Warfare 2. Other than that, I think the awards were pretty spot-on with MW2 and Uncharted 2 (the 2 best games of the year) getting the most recognition to boot.

Crap awards show but it's nice publicity for Uncharted 2 and Flower.

i still can't belive wolverine did not win best game based on a tv show or movie. i think that was highway robbery.

I liked Luke Skywalker as the Joker, and especially the lady who voiced Harlequinn... Uncharted 2's Drake is an obvious pick as well, but maybe they try to spread the awards around a bit. Still, props to the PS3 and Sony for winning some major awards.

Actually, I think this is another one that should have gone to Uncharted.

The soundtrack and score awards seem strange. RBB.... all they did was put the songs into a game.

There's a few qualms with the above, but for the important categories I mostly agree. Even if it isn't as popular, I think KZ2 should have eeked out MW2 for best FPS. It's much more technically impressive, the story is better [even if bland], and the MP is solid.

I never played Halo 3: ODST but I think that MW2 and Uncharted 2 had stellar soundtracks/scores.

This shows a balanced story adventure + 3rd person shooter be integrated so well like Uncharted 2. One cannot exist without the other. Too many game publishers think shooter needs to be first and then adventure story as second thought.

Games like Halo, Gears of War and Call of Duty series have great multiplayer but the story campaign side feel more secondary because those games are clearly designed for multiplayer first.

Is there a place I can watch this online? I'm kind of interested in seeing it. Dunno why really since every year I watch it I walk away hating the show a little more. Something oddly compelling about it though.

I don't get Spike so I can't watch a rerun and I missed the Live Stream last night.

I watched it online last night using Spike's website and a stream from Justin.tv

ODST has a great soundtrack, I've been giving it a listen on the ol' iPod.

I didn't think of Arkham, that would've been a good choice as well. Maybe Hugh Jackman was good in Wolverine, I didn't play it, but Megan Fox was pretty awful in the Transformers movie. I can't believe the game was any better.

Thats a deserving award for Uncharted 2...sadly anything "spike lee" is involved in I am not..cant stand the guy.

Sure I can see MW2 getting best Shooter, but Killzone 2 should of received Best Multi-player Game for its excellent lobby system and deep clan support!

The above is pretty much my beef's (including the soundtrack and score awards). Looks like throwaways to me, and not very important awards, but still there were better games that deserved those awards. Game based on other media was a horrible choice, no idea how they got that.

And what exactly are they worried about that they need to put "Human" before male and female voice? So they think the Droids are multiplying?

Also, I'd be a little peeved if I was a 360 owner and saw L4D, great game, but it was mainly a PC game/multi plat. Nothing else stacked up to it on the 360 this year?...

Rocksteady Studios also got robbed, they got best studios but no recognition for why. technically AA was based of the animated series; so there's a away to give the game it's due.

The whole award show looks like throwaway to me.

For exclusives, 360 did not have a very good year. Here's the list according to Wiki:

Stoked
Onechanbara
RACE Pro
Halo Wars
PopCap Arcade Vol 2
Ninja Blade
Halo ODST
Magna Carta 2
Lips #1 Hits
Forza 3
GTA Episodes

Yeah I know they did, but L4D over Forza?

You can also argue that L4D on any console is nuked, because it's very, very fast twitch gameplay that doesn't cross over well from PC to console. Still might be fun, but the game was slowed down to compensate for controllers; which is a bastardization in my book.

Anyways, yeah. Awards shows are throw always, but publishers do usually see a bump in sales after them. It also gives studios more bargaining power next game. Other then that, it's self fellation consumerism for the ad industry.

As a matter of quality its debateable (though Forza disappoints me more every time I play it), but as a matter of hype, or name recognition, or playing to the dew-fueled atmosphere Spike is trying to build... its not.

They gave the voice awards to celebrities in hopes of them showing up to accept and give their award show some credit with sponsors. It's nothing more.

Not sure how the nominees are picked, but the winners this year were determined by fan voting.

Are you sure? I was under the impression the past couple of years the nominees have been decided by a panel of games journalists.

I think NFS Shift deserved the racing title over Forza if for no other reason than it was quality on a multi-platform release over an exclusive (nevermind the fact that I feel its a better game overall).

I added a link. Considering the VGAs are just a big popularity contest now, some of the results are rather expected (MW2), while others are a bit of a welcome surprise (NHL 10).

Glad to see Uncharted 2 win. I guess fan voting is the way to go since the fans got it right
post #29 of 36
I actually voted last month, and I just finished watching the entire awards show (without knowing any of the results first) on my DVR moments ago. The way the awards were going to name actors in voice categories and multi-plats and 360 games in every other category, I was quite frankly shocked Uncharted 2 and Flower won anything (as much as they deserved it of course). My assumption is that when it came to GOTY and best independent game voting, the multi-plats/360 games in those categories split non-PS3 fan votes, whereas PS3 voters were pretty unanimous in their picks of U2 and Flower. (Unless of course the results are completely rigged--bought and paid for by Sony, MS, and the major studios )
