Bookshelf speaker on top of other bookshelf speaker?

Help needed with a noob question

Can I put a bookshelf speaker on top of another bookshelf speaker? They are of different makes (Tannoy F1 Mercury Custom and Sony SS-B1000) but they're all magnetically shielded. Any risk of harm to either or both?

Thanks!

As long as the bottom one is unplugged you should be fine As much as I like Sony (seriously, i do) I would use it as the stand..

Thanks for the quick response! Just love AVS

....errh...ok, you're just pulling my noob legs, right? Or do I seriously have to leave the bottom one unplugged for real? Both are hooked up to a stereo amp.

There is no risk of harm. I suspect that they would sound better in a more traditional arrangement, but hey, you're in the room, not me!

Sigh....She Who Must Be Obeyed is presently enforcing the agreement extracted from me under duress a few months ago that in consideration of her permitting the purchase of of a receiver and 5:1 speakers including front towers, the stereo amp, bookshelves and associated rat tails will have to be folded up/stacked etc...

Then what's the point?

Well, hopefully, if I can get everything nicely stacked up, taking up less floor space, no cables sticking out...SWMBO might be persuaded to accept this as sufficient compliance with our agreement...

Yeah but, configured that way, you could have just bought 2 speakers and an amp.

Actually, I got the amp early this year and hooked 2 pairs of bookshelves to it. A couple of months ago, I finally convinced my wife that we needed to upgrade to a receiver and 5:1 set up to get the real benefit of our blu ray players and 52" LCD. She agreed but on condition that I reduce the clutter, floor space taken up and hide the wires better. She actually wanted us to sell the amp but I persuaded her that I could reduce the clutter. So here's hoping she'll like or at least tolerate the stacked bookshelves...

Do you reckon the sound will be better with just one pair of speakers rather than stacking the bookshelves on top of each other? I'm a noob and just kind of assumed that since my amp has speaker A-B, 4 speakers has to be louder/better than 2?

That's between the two of you.

It would for me but I am more concerned with the purity of sound and the clarity of the soundstage, both of which would be compromised by mixing/stacking speakers.

Louder mebbe if that is necessary. Is it not loud enough with 2?

I would distribute the speakers around the room.
There are many ways to run wires where they need to go that can satisify appearance issues.
If you are in a house you can pop off the baseboards and run the speaker wire there.
Here is a product designed to address this issue.

If the links don't work go to Home Depot website and search for wiremold.

If you are not going to distribute the speakers I see no benefit to running multiple channels vs just using two speakers.
