At wits end. Please help!

Thread Starter
I have a Toshiba 37av502rz TV hooked up to my MacBook via the miniDVI port (use DVI to HDMI cable to connect it my TV's HDMI port).

For the first month, everything worked fine at 1080p. However, problems started appearing when I was watching movies and TV shows. At first, it was a red line on the screen for a fraction of a second once or twice during the movie. However, now during a movie, I lose signal completely for 2-3 seconds (then the picture returns again).

What is driving me insane is that this does not happen when I use the TV for other purposes, like browsing the web and playing video games. For both these activities, I still use the MacBook hooked up to the TV via HDMI. For web browsing I use 1080p, but I use 720p for video games. I have a Wii attached to the TV with RCA cable and no problems at all.

Why would my TV be having these short hickups at 1080p only during movie playback (I use VLC).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hook up a DVD or BR player and watch a movie and see if it repeats the problem.

Am I missing something about this set? I thought the xxAV502R is 720p only.

If you're really switching the MacBook to a 1080p output to watch the movie, then the screen would go blank for a few seconds because it wouldn't be able to sync, then it would revert to the prior resolution. It would only do that once, though, when you switched it. Not sure if that is what you are describing or not.

If it's not as simple as that, and it probably isn't because you say for the first month everything worked fine, then I would think try the other HDMI port and see if that helps. Also, being able to plug in another HDMI source as suggested above is a good idea.

If you don't have this problem when watching OTA or cable TV signals, then that would eliminate a problem with the screen itself leaving only input or the computer. You're saying the problem is only when you're using VLC, so trying another media player would be a good idea. Anything will do, such as the streaming you can get from Fox online, Hulu, just anything that might allow you to confirm the problem is specifically with VLC. The 1080p thing is still throwing me off, though. Can't find anything that would suggest you can use 1080p on this set.
