Leather covered speakers?

Thread Starter
Hi. I just built bookshelf speakers, and now I want to make them look nice. I am thinking about covering them with black leather, do you have tips how should I do it? The speaker is about 20cmX25cmX30cm.
Thanks!

Take a look at Sonus Faber speakers from Italy for some ideas. Beautiful cabinets. I was thinking about a leather covered Danley DTS 10. Would take a whole cow.

That would be cool t have a leather wrapped dts-10, but that much leather might cost some decent $$$. I think I will mention this over in the dts-10 thread. I have been thinking of different options for this.

Go to Vandykestaxidermy.com

Look at the deer/cow leather or the pigskin. They come in very large sizes, but you would have to check to make sure its not more than one piece or how big the actual piece is.

The trick is going to be how you treat the seams, and of course you will want to 'condition' the leather every now and then to keep it from completely drying out.

There is a thread located here with a great looking leather clad enclosure:

Not leather, but vinyl, but posted for inspiration: the Franks.

And damn if they are not one of the two best speaker systems I have ever heard.

If I were to do it, I'd want to use alcantara.

If it's anything like covering with vinyl use contact adhesive on both the fabric and box surface, a heat gun in case you need a bit of extra stretching and a staple gun to keep everything in place while the adhesive dries.

The biggest issues is getting any joins to look nice - this either involves stitching, or overlapping of fabric (which will cause a slight rise so for a perfect finish you have have to remove some wood where the overlap is).

Alternatively if you have a removable front and rear baffle you can hide the joins.
