Another "what should I get" thread. Best Buy content

Ive read quite a few threads and suggestions from users, but my case is a bit different. I have a $500 BB gift card so I want to use that towards the purchase of my home theater audio.

TV: Either a Panny P58V10 or a P65S1

I just bought my loft and am already stretching my budget on the set a bit on the TV, so I'm looking to get an home theater system for around $700 or so. It does not have to be a HTIB, but it does have to be available at Best Buy.

I found this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Polk+Aud...99112300050000
It comes out to ~$828 out the door, which is bit above my budget but if it's worth it im willing to spend the extra $100-130.

Is this a good set or can you guys recommend a better 5.1 system that can be put together at BB for around 700?

Thank you in advance!

I've also tried to build my own system but picking a receiver (Pioneer 519V/YahamaV365) and pair it with some speakers + sub, but the price came out to quite a bit more than $750.

And I will be using my PS3 as my Blu-ray player

+ a Pioneer VSX-519V?

That will put me at $860 out the door.

How will this system compare to the one I posted in my initial post?

The last thread I saw like this someone suggested selling the gift certificate for $400 or $450 and then buying something better off the internet like Energy, TSC, Jamo, Aperion, etc.

Did a quick search on those brands that you've mentioned and if I add a receiver I'm looking at 1k+ for most of their entry level speakers.

Well, you'd be over the $500 gift card so it wouldn't matter if it's bought from Best Buy but, yeah, the 519 or 819 seem like decent choices. You could probably find a better deal online and not have to pay tax.

The bookshelf speakers will blow away the Polk with 2.5" drivers. If your room is even medium size, and it sounds like it is because you're buying a huge TV, you'd be better off with at least bookshelf speakers. Go down to Best Buy and compare them.

How big is your room?
What will you use this for (movies/TV/games/music)?

Its a loft, so it's one big space. I already bought a washer and dryer and Im getting the TV from them as well so I would rather get it all at BB.

I normally buy all my stuff online and search for the best price, but this big stuff like a washer, dryer, and tv I didnt want to deal with 'online shops' should something bad happens so I paid a little more for peace of mind.

And this system will be used for (TV/movies/music/games) in that order.

It's quite simple then...you need bigger speakers for a big open loft. Please go down to the store and compare the speakers and pay attention to the difference between a 2.5" driver and a 5.5" driver - it's noticeable. Add a large open space and you might be able to imagine its effect.

The subwoofer in that package looks kind of lightweight but you'd have to spend a lot more to get better at Best Buy...it'll do I guess and I suppose anything is easy to return if you're not happy. Maybe consider another pair of Tsi100 bookshelf speakers instead of the OWM3.

Look at the Onkyo HT-S9100 THX HTIB. THX technology is rare in a HTIB in this price range and packaging is solid if you buy it online and Onkyo is very reliable. It also has the Audyssey 2EQ to maximize performance and sound based on capturing room acoustics via the supplied calibrated microphone.
I have this connected to my p58v10 and love it.
You can buy them online for 750 shipped no tax out the door.

Read the reviews on this from cnet and various online sources and you will see that this compares to setups costing 2-3K.

You will not be disappointed going with this product. There is also a specific thread for this system under HTIB's.

Thanks and I'll look into that as well. Do you know if it can be used as a 5.1 system? my couches will be placed in the middle of the room and I don't want to have all these speakers/stands around the room. I'm even considering mounting the rear surround speakers on the ceiling.

Do you have pictures of your setup?

Thanks!

i'd trade the $500 BB gift card for $500 cash and buy something online that's cheaper. i hate retail stores.....i will never buy anything from them

Yes you an run 5.1
My system is set up but not picture worthy yet.(speaker wire running over the carpet etc.)
My furniture arrives tommorow and then I plan to put crown molding around my ceiling in my basement home theater room like this to hide the speaker wires and then I do not have to pull wire and make long runs.
This is an example of pulling wire behind the crown molding.

TV is mounted using a costco slim profile mount good for 200#'s.
There are lots of existing pics and comments on the s9100 thread

Luckily I wear the pants in my family so I make the decisions on placment and colors in my cave.

wow, after seeing that photo I understand why people buy soundbars and don't want speakers all around the room. Hopefully you can get your speakers in white and smaller. Sorry, that sounds rude. Gotta do what you gotta do but my wife would shoot that down in a hurry. I am fortunate to have a dedicated home theater in the basement and my great room theater, which we watch almost all the time now because its so convenient and now has a 61" HDTV, has white speakers in the back that aren't very noiceable and black in the front because they blend in with a custom black cabinet. Not really on subject so I will bow out.

Eh, doesn't look that bad to me. If the wife objects, get a new wife.

Kidding, but I've definitely seen worse. White speakers, even if they match the room decor color, always looked funny unless they were placed a certain way.

Thanks for all the inputs. Theyre greatly appreciated.
However I will agree that the setup shown in the pictures are not what I would like IMHO. But to each his own.

I want some satellite speakers for the rear surround that I can mount in the ceiling.

Went to BB today but unfortunately they didnt have the polk audi bookshelf for me to listen to.

I think then that, given what I know so far about your room and that you want to buy only from BB with that budget, the OWM3 might just be unobtrusive enough for you without being too much of a compromise. They seem to be built for various types of mounting but still have decent enough specs for surround duty. I really think the TSI package is a better solution than your original choice. The front three is mostly what's important.

Come over to the Westside this weekend, I know that stuff is always on display over here at BB in Culver City or Pico & Sawtelle. Let me know if you want some ideas of places to visit in LA if you decide to buy from somewhere other than BB.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I'll definitely try to stop by a BB on the west side while Im looking at some furniture.

I decided to perhaps go on a different route and might consider building this system slowly by just getting a receiver, 2 front speakers, center speaker, and sub for now and worry about the rear after my place is fully furnished.

Found some good deals on a Bose 161 speakers but after a quick search on AVS I learned that theyre just overpriced mediocre speakers. Im not too familiar with other brands that can offer a small and yet powerful sound within that $100-160 price range. I'll appreciate if you guys can point me out some good front and center speakers and sub as well.

It sounds like what you really want is something small and unobtrusive, is that right?

Can you estimate the dimensions of your loft? You just said it's one big room but that might be relative. I've seen some downtown lofts with very high ceilings and some not so high...what size are we talking about?

Pm'ed you a picture of a very similar unit to the one I have, but mine is about 100sq ft bigger.

I don't mind having bigger front speakers, but I do want small surround speakers which will be mounted on the ceiling pretty much in the middle of my living room so I dont want anything that will look out of place.
