EMOTIVA Thread [TECHNICAL TALK ONLY] - Page 54

When it says that it will push 275w during 2 channel operation, does that mean if it gets only 2 channel signals [pre/pro in 2 channel mode] the amp automatically will have a larger amount of power driving 2 speakers?

Or is there a switch/setting/different way to wire the speaker to maket his work?

It's the same total power, but the fewer channels that require power, the more the amp has to push over them.

This is a question for Joerod and others who own(ed) Onkyo (905 &885p) and Emotiva (XPA/MPS series). Will I hear any differences in sound quality between:
(1) Onkyo 906 and
(2) Onkyo 886P with XPA-5 (MPS-2 will be too expensive)
I know none of the '6 models are out yet. Please advise based on your experiences on Onkyo '5 models.

By the way, I have M&K THX 5.1 speaker setup.

Read the stuff other members responded to the exact same question, but then i was asking for the UPA-7 and the XPA-3 which is comparable to the XPA-5 you are asking about....
Thanks. I read that particular thread. I do not want to add XPA-5 if I buy the 906. UPA-7 is not at all comparable to XPA-5.
If I go with my option (1) I will loose the balanced outputs and the unit will likely be hot. What else I will be missing with option (1)?

You would not hear much difference between those receiver/pros since they are basically using the same insides. The Onkyo products are a good combination with the Emotiva AMPs.

honestly... try using the 906 first. that amp is a monster of a beast ...

If i were you i just save the money.... and buy other things... because I don't think you will hear huge difference unless you crank up everything really loud....you 'might' hear a difference.

Usually external amps are paired with less $$ receivers... or you are trying to run a movie theater in you house. I don't know what kind of set up you have, and do you really need something that big?? But the 906 is no slouch, and i m sure it has no problems powering all your speakers even in a theater setting!!! So I will try that out first and see how it goes before blowing $850 on the XPA-5 ...
That may be true^ but I will say I am hearing a HUGE difference using the MPS-2 with my Onkyo 885 PRO. It is absolutely the best sound I have heard in my theater so far.
The 905/906 are very good but they can't compare to a high quality amp (or separates)...

I was looking at the XPA-5 to use with a Pioneer Elite 94, and Jamo c809's which are 6 ohm speakers. Would that be compatible? I was thinking it would be an upgrade in sound quality, but was looking for some other opinions. Thanks.

I'm am in a similar frame of mind as kosha. I too would be looking to either get an Onkyo AVR (876) or pair the XPA-5 with something - (MPS-2 is too much for me as well.) But I assume an XPA-5would have an appreciable advantage over an 876.

But what are the feelings here for just matching it with the upcoming UMC-1? I was planning to wait for it's release and then take the Emotiva plunge! What's wrong with just using that for the pre/pro? (Surely it won't be any worse than an Onkyo.)

Comments?

I am hoping that the UMC-1 will be much, much better than the Onkyo. If you can wait a little longer, I would. Just my opinion.

I plan to try one out but let's be realistic. I seriously doubt it will better the 885 PRO but of course I have been wrong before. I will definitely do a good A/B comparison...

I agree with Joerod. UMC-1 or even XMC-1 will have less features set than 885p/886p.

less features???? like what man??? lets face it, how can you even speculate a comparison on a product that has not been released. And even with that being said, they have barely released any spec info! lol that just cracks me up.

Heck the XMC-1 is going to be using the same dual DSP chip set as the Krell Evolution 707, and your saying thats a less/lesser feature than an onkyo?
