Hey everyone-
I've seen lots of good advice on this forum but nothing for my specific case. I have a Panasonic 50" plasma en route and need to get my cabinet ready. Here are my parameters:
* Installation is in my basement. The walls are hollow block covered by vertical furring strips (every 16") covered by drywall.
* I have two Ikea besta cabinets to hold my components. Each cabinet is 15" tall by 48" wide. I plan to hang the cabinets side by side (total of 8' wide) and put components, DVDs, wii stuff, etc. in openings/drawers of the cabinet.
* I plan to put the TV (~75 lbs) on it's pedestal on top of the cabinets. It will end up spanning the crack between the two cabinets if it is centered.
* I need to hang the cabinets on the wall to elevate them over a baseboard heater.
* I also want space to run wires (including electrical) behind the cabinets.
My current plan is as follows:
* Attach a horizontal 8 foot 2x4 over the drywall using long tapcons (through 1 1/2" of the 2x4, the drywall, furring strips, and into at least 1" of the block).
* Attach several vertical pieces of 2x4 about 20" long below the horizontal 2x4. This will make something that looks like a big upside-down comb or a reinforced 2x4 box with the bottom open. These will also tapcon into the block.
* Attach a decent thickness piece of plywood to the 2x4s. This will make a solid looking box from the top and sides but with an open bottom.
* Attach the IKEA mounting bracket for the cabinets to the plywood. Hang the cabinet about 6" below the top of the plywood so I have some plywood exposed for wire entry.
* Drill holes in the plywood both above the cabinet (for the TV) and behind the cabinet (for component wires). Since the bottom of the "box" is open I will be able to hang wires, access power, etc.
My questions on this are:
* Is there a simpler way to use what I have (the IKEA cabinets, in particular) to get what I want (components + TV mounted above baseboard heat)?
* Does this sound like it will be secure enough? I anticipate having at least 7 tapcons on the horizontal 2x4 (one each through the furring strips) plus 2-3 each on the vertical 2x4s. This would be about 21-28 tapcons to hold up the weight of the 2x4s, plywood, cabinet, TV, accessories.
* I would prefer not to cut open the drywall so I can change my mind and move things easier in the future. Do you think that mounting all this hardware through the drywall then into the furring/block would increase the risk of failure?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
