Small progression of my HT

Hey guys! I'm not entirely new here, but I haven't really ever posted anything yet. I bought my house from my great grandmother in the summer of '08, and the first thing I wanted to do was make the "finished" basement (crappy old pieces of carpet, ugly ugly green paint, and ceiling tiles) into a home theater. It started out with a projector sitting on top of a wardrobe and some cheap speakers, and has slowly changed and morphed a handfull of times to where it is today. This first pic is one I took after I already mounted the projector and rearrangeda bit:

Ugly, yeah?

So after that, I got some carpet from work (I'm a flooring manager at the local Menards), and some paint as well. Painted the walls, put in some carpet, built a frame for the screen, etc:

I had that setup for a while, and then I slightly rearranged (separated the top and bottom of the cabinet, moved all the equipment to the opposite wall). It stayed like that until the other night...

I decided my screen was a touch on the large side. Don't get me wrong, a huge screen is awesome (11'x6', which I think I calculated to about 152"), but the way the room is laid out gave me very little options as far as seating and arrangement. The room is 13' wide, and 34' long. I have an HT side, and the other side is for my band where we have my drums, all the guitars, amps, etc. Here is the progress from last night and today:

and my video game collection I moved upstairs to a built in cabinet that was otherwise useless

The shelf thingy I built this afternoon. I haven't decided whether or not I want to paint it black or stain it, probably a dark color. Anyways, I forgot to pick up stuff to make my frame and screen, and I also have yet to mount the projector. That'll be in the next week or so, but I'm already liking the setup better than my old one, even at a sacrifice of screen size. I'll still be around 80", so I can't complain too much Not too bad for a recent college grad working retail 45 hours a week! I think I have a total of about $1500-$2000 into it, which includes the projector, sound, furniture, lumber and etc, carpet, and a few other odds and ends. Feedback and suggestions are very welcome!

A lot better than before. Not sure about the pink/red lighting around the room though.

Yeah, the red light rope was kind of something I grew out of, but it's all ran for right now so I'm gonna leave it until I find a better use for it. I still need to pick up some screen material and finish my screen, but I have a temp one up now which is just a shower curtain stretched over the frame I made. Once that's all done and everything is ran and cleaned up, I'm gonna stain the stand black, and then redo the HTPC. It's getting to where I want it, although I'm sure it'll change again!

So after doing some research on this site and some google links, I used the curtain blackout material to make my screen, and wow! the outcome was simply stunning! Only cost me $13 (making the whole screen project cost around $30), and only took a few hours to complete. The layout is complete, and the only thing left to do is run/buy a few longer cables, stain the shelf, and hang the screen permanently

I ordered some cables from monoprice today. They have a "special instructions" in the shipping screen. I was bored:

Now I just need to get some better pics

ok, so I again apologize for the crappy pic quality, but it's all I have at the moment! I've done a little more over the last week or two, still have some details to work out. I used some 2x4s that I had covered in carpet for a border (although I had to make one or two more), stood on their side, so it hides the cables but also lets the red light shoot upward and isn't distracting. Here's the outcome so far:

here's the dissassembled pieces of my old screen

Thoughts?

Oh it's still there, exactly the same as the last update. I was standing in that room to take the first pic.

EDIT: Just for you

What do you guys think of this idea? The panel isn't attached right now, just a piece of foam with carpet rolled around it. I think I like it, maybe black auto carpet instead though.

I've also been toying around with the idea of painting the ceiling black, but if I did, I'd probably wait til I built a permanent wall.

So, I got bored again.... I fixed a few more things. I bought a real receiver, some decent front speakers and a sub, and modified my component stand a bit. Layout is still basically the same:

(I realize I need a better camera, and I should be getting one fairly soon)

LOL. That is hilarious! I dunno how the ladies feel, but by the look on Bobby Hill & his friend's face I think they were a bit taken back when they saw your slippers to say the least.

I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist. You room looks better. The next thing you might consider would be painting the ceiling flat black to help cut down on reflections on your ceiling and you wouldn't have to paint the music room side on the other side of the curtains.

Painting the ceiling is actually something I've wanted to do for a while, but I plan to put a real wall up, redo all the electrical down here, and hopefully this fall maybe drywall, so I'm putting that on hold for now. Still far from what I want, but every time I decide what I really want it changes after a few weeks I was going to completely do a dedicated theater, but currently I'm enjoying this setup for the time being. Next spring I'll hopefully have a 7.1 receiver and some nicer rears, and I want to get an HD PJ. All in good time.

Wow, I didn't realize how long it's been since I've updated!!! There aren't too many major updates, but a few. I put up a wall (semi temporary, but still solid), painted the ceiling black, new HD projector, Slim 360, slim PS3, new 7.1 receiver (only running 5.1), hung my rears, moved my retro gaming stuff into this room, and also I got married  Anyway, here are a few more crappy pictures, since I can never get my camera to cooperate down there. Let me know what you think/what I can improve! (and yes, that is a Laserdisc player hooked up  )
