Headache and 60 Hz

Thread Starter
This weekend I purchased a 47 in LH30. I am finding that after watching it for a bit and or playing a game on it I begin to get headaches and very tired eyes. I hope its not the TV cause I paid 599 for it at Frys!

I calibrated my tv to the best of my ability based off user settings found multiple places. I have a rather small living room and Im prob about 9 ft away when gaming. I keep my room dim lit and usually turn on a light from my kitchen to kind of "backlight" it a bit.

Could I just be over sensitive to the 60 Hz refresh (motion blur) or do you guys think picking up some LED back lights would help.

I find that I can see/hear things most people tend to miss.

I thought bout picking up a pack of the dioders from Ikea?

Opinions/Experiences?

Take two Samsung 46B650's and your headache will be gone by morning.

I would guess brightness needs to be turned down, LCD's do not have real refresh rates like CRT's do, thats where the term came from because CRT's had to scan the display 60,70,75 etc times a second depending on its refresh rate it was set at

LCD's are what is called a sample and hold type display, if an image sent to the display does not change the pixels on the display will not change either

i've sat in-front of 60hz LCD's for many years now and excessive brightness is the only thing that can give me a headache from looking at them, unlike a CRT where a refresh under 60hz would easily give people headaches and even 60hz for some people and thats why CRT PC monitors were made to also do 70,75 and even 85 hz refresh to remedy the problem

Hopefully you took the TV out of the default "torch mode" used for display in stores by lowering the backlighting to 50-60%. If not I am not surprised you have headaches

Of course, its in home modl and backlight is set to 50; basic configuration I am seeing for this model in the LH30 thread.

I also called LG cause I am having a bit of a audio sync issue and found that the serial number found on the left side of the tv differs from the back?!?!

Using a bias light behind the TV can help reduce eye strain and personally I use the ceiling lights when gaming since it seems to be much harder on my eyes than watching TV or movies. Also, you may need to lower backlight and/or contrast further if the image seems too bright at times.

I think you just have the backlight cranked up too high. Try lowering the brightness using the movie preset first, then adjust it manually. Try to find the proper adjustment settings from CNET or some other source to optimize your viewing. If you are watching in complete darkness, that could be an issue as well. Try placing a lamp to the left or right of the TV like off in a corner.

I hope that helps.

Too bright backlighting can be one cause but I'd also check your frame rates in games and when watching videos. Some people can be bothered by the jerkiness of lower frame rates...for example, when watching Hulu, or when playing a game at the native resolution.
