No Dolby Digital with Blu-Ray?

Hi Group!

My Pioneer receiver can decode Dolby Digital/DTS through optical input from my PS3. I thought everything was gravy when I was playing Guitar Hero Metallica. I just went into audio settings in GH and hit the DD button and presto! The DD light on my receiver came on and the music sounded much better. So when I popped in the Star Trek (2009) Blu-Ray I saw the option for Dolby TrueHD, French and Spanish DD. That's it. I tried all three, but my receiver always reverts to Pro-Logic II. What gives? I really thought Blu-Ray would be backward compatible with DD. Even the French and Spanish DD didn't work.

Any suggestions on settings?

Blu-Ray IS backward compatible with DD. In fact it is a requirement that a DD soundtrack be included. What is NOT a requirement is that it be DD 5.1. It could be a 2-channel DD track, hence you're seeing DPL II being used.

That sounds like a settings issue with your PS3. TrueHD includes a companion DD 5.1 track and dts-MA will send the lossy DTS core. Both are 5.1. If you aren't even getting DD 5.1 from the foreign language tracks, then the problem is not related to how the player outputs lossless tracks to an older receiver. It would appear that your PS3 is set to PCM, not bitstream.

There's no requirement for a DD track on Blu-ray. The disc must contain a PCM or DD or DTS track that can be processed by older equipment. Only one of the three is required.

How do I know if I'm set to PCM or bitstream on my PS3? When I go to audio options on the PS3, I selected DD 5.1, DTS 5.1, and PCM 2.0 and 5.1. I also selected optical as the output method. I didn't see an option to change from PCM to bitstream. I don't understand why it worked in Guitar Hero, but not on Blu-Ray movies.

It seems like you have the selections identified right there:

DD 5.1 = DD Bitstream
DTS 5.1 = DTS Bitstream
PCM 2.0 = 2 channel PCM
PCM 5.1 = 5.1 channels of PCM

And by the way, unless you have a PS3 SLIM, you cannot bitstream DD True HD/DTS HD-MA. They are decoded internally and output as multichannel PCM.

N.A. since the OP is using S/PDIF.

My statement is still true regardless and was included for completeness since the OP was asking about bitstream/PCM.

Sorry, but I'm not familiar with PS3 settings. There are several huge PS3 threads in the Blu-ray Players forum where you can find that information along with owners who can help.
