ps3 on hd crt: awful! why?

hi all.

A few days ago, I treated myself to a PS3. Rather not have the red ring of death, of xbox 360.

I have a Sony KD-34XBR970 crt. a wonderful tv. no 1080p though.

when I hooked up the ps3, the game that i loaded up, looked AWFUL in graphics!

I had set the configuration for the 1080i, i could hardly read the print on the configuration screen. the Demon's souls game had it where the pixelated screen was also very dark.

I went back to the settings and used the 470i, the setting that this menu first gave to me. now the print looked nice, but the game looked even more awful!!


back to best buy and exchanged it for a psp!

the little ole psp, so small. but i am supposed to be able to use component
cables on it.
And...i did and the game images look INCREDIBLE!!

I went out and bought two more psp games!

why?

I read of some people's woes, and some successes, on the xbr. why not me having a good image.

did I return this in disgust not trying "everything", some setting or such that might work better?

should i just give up and enjoy this tv with the older games that i have.

and what is you all's opinion on the xbox 360, for this tv?

Does your TV support 720p? Are you using component cables, or just the composite cable that comes with the system?

I have a 30" Samsung CRT HD. The PS3 looks great using HDMI set at 1080i, 720p.

You hooked up the PS3 with the supplied composite cables? I thought those were just for decoration.

I used to game in a Sony KV30HS420, The tv "accept" 720p.
Through HDMI, it looked very good. And your set is superior.

Probably.

And you don't have to be afraid to post or something, we have lots of people with distinct writing styles. A lot of them do quite well for themselves, and have very nice couches.

yeah, don't worry too much. Like everywhere there's trolls, and members that sometimes jump too quick. This is defiantly the place to get help as long as you’re sincere and try to do a search first (there’s wealth’s of info from long ago in the archived topics)

A quick disclaimer when first posting that you have a medical condition, (or lack of English skills) that proceeds a post usually fixes any misunderstanding from all but the worst members.

As for the HDTV, sounds like a connection/set up issue. One thing you can try is to hold the PS3 power button for 10 seconds when it's powered up and it'll do an auto detect of your TV's settings. Still an issue, might be something going on with the TV settings itself.

Don't mind the rude people -- they're on every forum. Fortunately, AVSForum has a high population of very good folks as well, and you're welcome to be one of them.

As above, there are quite a few possibilities for connecting your PS3 and selecting an output resolution/screen format. If you still want the PS3, I've no doubt we can help to get it correctly configured.

I don't get it, you returned all this stuff, then bought more stuff, and then are returning more stuff... you never bothered to ask this before you returned this stuff and had you done so, we would have told you to use the right cables and everything would have been fine.

In addition, "you all's" has nothing to do with autism, that's just bad English. And on another semi-related note, I still can't believe that dumbass sony won't throw a $0.25 6' HDMI cable in the PS3 box so people stop hooking up their PS3's with the SD cables that comes in the box and say "OMFGZ PS3 SUX"

Yeah, it's really kind of moot now isn't it.

BTW I have the same set, and can feed it 1080i/720p via either component or HDMI and it looks great. So the OP was doing something wrong. More clarification on the nature of the PQ problem is necessary, or even screencaps could help.

Does Sony even sell an HDMI cable? I could see if they were hoping to benefit on the purchase of an outrageously priced cable, but I remember when I first bought a PS3 that it was all 3rd party cables that they had in stock next to it. Just package a cable - buying in bulk probably would cost them less then a nickel each.

i have my ps3 hooked up to a sony 30XS955 sony CRT, its a 1080i tv and it looks fantastic. Something you had was set wrong, maybe you had it set to 1080p? Or it could have been a bad unit

I game on a 34XS955 Sony CRT and the only HD panel that comes close to it in PQ is the Kuro.

than even an old SNES on a washed out, old, set that was for sale for $15 at the thrift shop!
Probably a bad ps3. Best Buy has a good return policy.

might be on sale after new year.

I got a psp instead from the Return and I was Amazed at how nice the image is, covers the whole screen, in Component cables.
some day when I have a ps3, again, i will return to this Forum and read some.

there is a reason why I "stick" with my crt tube set. Oh this XBR, took three men plus me, to move it!

My autistic sensitivities to fluorescent lights! I cannot place a finger on it, but that on some LCD screens, I have a vague
unrest feeling in my brain, after watching for a bit, especially if the screen is bright. Then too, i can see *any* flicker.

They do not make these tube sets much anymore.....

I knew a kid, in college, who could not stand to be around *any* fluorescent light! He had to wear a hat with bill, indoors all of the time. Do not Ask me about how I feel inside of those huge big box stores!

CRT's own.. God of War 3 looks damn good on my HDTV CRT, especially the dark scenes.. Givews me goose bumps.

agreed, HD CRT should have the best picture you can get. Mighty heavy beast, but still no average lcd or plasma can compare to a good crt. Thepsp is a neat "toy" but it gets extremely old very quick and has a very little gaming library, there is no way in hell a PSP should look better then a PS3 - never. Should have kept the PS3, and dare I say it but the new 360's should be more reliable and I would have chosen anything over a PSP if it was my main gaming rig.

You say the font was unreadable, why? was it blurry or just small? 1080i looks to be your tv's native res, it should look wonderful. That being said, you NEED to go out and get either component cables ( green,red,blue cables) or HDMI cables in order for it to work. If you tried to set it to 1080i using the standard RCA cables ( yellow, red, white) which are the only cables the PS3 comes with - that was your problem. as it would look like a total mess/
