PS3 died!! Question about backup and gamesaves.

Well my 60gb bit the dust right before Christmas Plan on buying a new one after Christmas. Here is the scenario. I used the backup utility this past summer and havent done it since then so my newer gamesaves are not on that backup. However I have been backing up my gamesaves regularly on a SD card. My question is after I do a restore using the backup utility on the new PS3 slim, will I be able to transfer the newer gamesaves from my SD card afterwards.

Hopefully I didnt confuse anybody. lol

Sorry that happened to you. If your gamesaves are on a SD card you should have no problem transferring them to a new ps3.

Couldn't you just remove the HDD and put it in the new PS3?

No! And don't try it ever. The PS3 has this amazing feature of knowing when a new HDD (aka not the HDD that was just in the machine) is put in it. It will ask you everytime to reformat the new HDD and you will lose any PS3 information contained on that HDD. And say you did that on accident. Guess what happens when you try to put the old HDD back in after you swapped it out. It will ask you to reformat it too. So now your doubly screwed. Never do a direct swap of HDD's unless it's a brand new machine and you are looking to upgrade. You should only consider it once you've done a full backup and can restore old info off a back-up HDD to the newly formatted HDD.

thanks for the info everyone. I know you won't be able to transfer gamesaves directly from the old ps3 to a new ps3 without getting a popup message saying the save is linked to another name or something to that matter. I'm hoping it should be ok after I do a restore on the new ps3. And based off you said ting, it should work :crosses fingers:

If the save is copy protected, then you'll get the message.

I'm curious: If I were to upgrade my PS3's HDD and had an external casing kicking around could I plug the old HDD in via USB and pull the data, gamesaves mostly, off it?

Nope, PS3 HDD encryption. You need another HDD, a total of three to pull off a swap with restore. Some people have used a PC to act as 3rd (but a true external makes it so much easier). They would use the new HDD #2 to make a backup (via PS3), then they would copy the backup file to a PC (HDD #3). Then they would make the swap of HDD's (# 1 and 2) in the PS3. Now connect HDD # 1 in external to the PC and copy the backup file back to it. Then connect #1 to the PS3 (with # 2 in the PS3) and use the restore feature.

Damn, I guess I'll just stick to using my external drive to back everything up.

Thanks to everyone that helped out in this thread. Got my slim today and did the restore I had saved this past summer. Afterwards downloaded my udpated gamesaves via flash drive and everything worked out great.

I know this has been mentioned several times throughout these forums but PLEASE backup your PS3. I was one of those that thought my PS3 wouldnt die, but it happened. I will be backing up more often.

EVERYONE I know with 60GB PS3's (5 people) have had theirs break.

Double check if your saves actually work. They almost always transfer and copy to the new destination but certain games lock saves to a particular PS3. It will give you a corrupted save file message if it's system locked. This is coming from experience, i had a launch 60 go tits up last thanksgiving.
