STF-1 vs DSW microPRO 1000

Looking for a small hide-able musical sub for less than $350. Seems like the STF-1 gets a lot of good press, but the Polk Micro looks good on paper (1200W RMS, 27Hz -3dB) and is pretty cheap refurb from Polk direct on eBay. These will be paired with Polk RTi8s. Any opinions or other suggestions? Here's the requisite background info:

1. Budget. $350 including shipping.

2. Size requirements/limits. 15Wx15Dx20H *or* 12Wx16Dx19H

3. Room dimensions. ~4500 ft^3 15x45x10, but primary listening distance is 10-12 ft from front corner of room.

4. Primary uses. 80% music 20% sports, no HT.

5. Listening habits. Lowish SPL. 85dB max

6. Appearance requirements. None, will be hidden behind side of couch in front corner.

7. Timeframe. 0-2 weeks.

The Polk is beautiful; however, the HSU sub is probably your better sub....especially since you are using it 80% for music. To be honest with you, before you invest in a subwoofer you may really want to do further research if that will be enough sub for that large space....regardless if you are only 10-12 feet from the sub. Will it be placed in a corner?

Yes, it will be in the front right corner. I'm willing to sacrifice volume in this application, but if you know of anything else that would be better in this price/size range I'm all ears!

Polk subs including the 1000 do not get good feedback on here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1206041

Do some searching on here before you buy.

I have done quite a bit of research, but there is very little information on the DSW series. There is nothing in the link you gave or any of its sub-links about the Micro 1000 or any of the DSW series subs. Certainly Polk has earned a bit of brand avoidance by putting out the miserable PSW series, but they do make decent speakers in general and the DSWs seem to be an attempt at a better low-end sub line.

Perhaps Polk has just burned the bridge here and won't ever break back into this market even if they do decide to put out decent subs.

Can you stretch another $39 for the STF-2?

I was thinking the same thing, but the STF-2 looks to be larger than his listed dimensions allow. That said, I'd try to squeeze it in if at all possible. The STF-2 is a substantial step up from the STF-1 and is a no-brainer IMO for only ~$40 more. It will have more output (I'd guess 2-4dB) than the STF-1 which will come in really handy in that large room, and also digs significantly deeper (at least ~5hz).

i recently purchase a polk mp4k, its a great sub on par with hsu3.3 or svs sb12+ but with a much better finish. I'm not saying the other polk subs are any good, but my mp4k is exellent. I did went to hsu headquarter and demoed the hsu 3.3 after my polk purchase to reconfirm my thoughts about the sub's performance. The mp1k aint too bad either but remember how small they are.

datranz: Thanks, that about the first piece of actual information about the microPRO series I've found other than mentioning it in passing or "Polk=evil". I live close to one of the Fry's that has a floor model, I'll try to get down there to listen to it.

lalakersfan34: Yeah, honestly one of the things keeping me from jumping on on the STF-1 is that fact that the STF-2 is sitting there for a few dollars more with much better performance. I'll broach the subject of rearranging the furnature with the WAF. Wish me luck! :-O
