sony dcr-trv25 not connecting via firewire

My Sony Mini-DV camcorder is not being recognized by my Gateway running Vista. I thought it might be a bad connection at the camcorder but today I noticed that the camcornder reads "dv in" on the viewfinder when I plug the cable in so it does recognize that the firewire cable is plugged in. Any thoughts?
