adding resistor to subwoofer

Hey everybody, I have a 1 ohm 10" subwoofer and a 600w amp which can use 2 and 4 ohm subwoofers. I have obtained a 3 ohm resistor in hope to attach it inline with the subwoofer wires to make a 4 ohm sub. Would this work?

You have a 3 ohm resistor - what is the watt rating?
If the sub is a dual voice coil you can connect the coils in series and double the resistance - making it a 2 ohm load.
I doubt a resistor is going to work very well but you might give it a try - just make sure its a big one - you'll need it to dissipate lots of heat.

I dont know much about this stuff but it says Dual on the subwoofer and i (think) the resistor is a 1/4 watt its one of those smaller bead looking ones.

You have a fire extinguisher handy?
That 1/4 watt resistor will pop like a firecracker.

rofl oh boy at least its air tight in a box. So what kind of a resistor should i look for, or how would i go about changing the coils?

Is this car audio stuff? Maybe ask in car audio section. But don't mess with electronics if as you say, don't know much about it.

Check at Allied Electronics, Mouser Electronics, Digikey for Dale power resistors rated at least 150 watts. These will run between 30 and 50.00.

They are built into a solid metal air cooled housing and have 2 or 4 screw holes for mounting.
