Remote selection to compliment my Home Automation

Thread Starter
I have a quest for a nice remote to merge into my present system. I'm getting sick of my present Automation guy and paying list prices plus high labor costs.

Equipment:

Vantage Infusion Lighting controls
Speakercraft MZC-88 distributed audio (RF)
Panasonic 50" plasma
Yamaha amp
Panasonic BD
Directv DVR

The Vantage light switches have IR ports built in to execute simple functions. I prefer to have the ability to be able to change inputs on the TV as well as manually enter channel numbers for the Directv.

There are just SO many choices out there...

My thought was RTI T3-V but if I understand correctly this sucks me into relying on someone else to do the programming?

Yeah, you are pretty much going to have to use an installer if you want to go with RTI.

Not sure exactly what you are looking for but some alternatives to consider are:
  • The Philips Pronto line. Lots of mostly touchscreen remotes. Flexible but complicated programming.
  • The Nevo Q50 or S70. Relatively simple programming interface.
  • The URC line. Very nice stuff, programming difficulty and flexibility varies greatly by remote. You need to buy it from a dealer who will provide you the programming software or you will be stuck.

The first couple of things you need to think about is what are you trying to accomplish with your remote and how many, if any, hard buttons do you want on the remote. Personally, I like all the frequently used buttons to be hard buttons so that I can hit them without looking at them but having a big giant touch screen is also cool.
