HDMI Switcher won't work with BluRay player

We got a new Blu Ray player for Christmas. We previously had HD-DVD and HD Satellite HDMI feeding a Harman Kardon AVR154. HK has only 2 HDMI inputs. So I purchased a Monoprice HDX-401TA 4 port HDMI switcher with analog and digital audio outputs. The reviews on the sight were mostly positive. I decided to leave my sat plugged into one HDMI and switch the HD-DVD and Blu Ray through the switcher. HDMI feeds into the switcher and the switcher seperates the audio and sends it out seperately to the AVR through your choice of optical/coax or analog. The problem is the switcher can't seem to lock the Blu Ray HDMI signal. It skips and the audio goes in and out and there is no voices on a movie (there are voices on trailers however. It drops constantly and is really unwatchable. HD-DVD works fine, after a couple hiccups it locks the signal fine. I tried changing the digital out settings from PCM to Bitstream HD & legacy and mixed, but nothing seems to help. Right now I can't afford to replace the AVR so if this switcher doesn't work we'll have to live without the HD-DVD player for a while. Any idea on what to do to get this to work?

Those switches are finicky with HDMI handshaking. I need to turn my receiver on 1st and then the switch and then the DVD player. Other equipment has to be turned on in a different order. Play with that and see if it helps. If not, Monoprice is cool about returns but you pay for shipping it back.

Have you tried feeding the DVR and HD-DVD player off the switch and connecting the Blu-Ray directly?

WOW! Thanks for the suggestions. I will give it another spin.

the problem could be the audio format coming out of the blu-ray. if you are hooked up with hdmi, the player is probably trying to send dts-ma or uncompressed audio, which cannot work with optical or coax. you said you are getting audio with the trailers, well because most of them are just regular dd5.1, ad the main movie has the better audio. like the above posters said, i would connect the blu-ray directly and switch the hd-dvd and dvr. that way the receiver is getting the hdmi signal from the blu-ray and can get the best audio.

You guys are geniuses (geniusi?)!! Hooked HDDVD & DVR through switcher and both work perfectly. Bluray is directly connected to AVR.

Sitlet you are probably right about the audio, but no matter what I set it for it still wouldn't sinc, audio or video. Never dawned on me to hook it the other way. Glad to be part of this community once again.

Had another problem and it turned out to be the HDMI cable going from switcher to AVR. Cable end was small or something and was loose in the terminal on the switcher. Swapped it with another cable that fits in snug and have had no more problems for a few days now. Also I have been able to program the switcher into my Harmony remote. It took a bit of troubleshooting, but now that everything is working everyone is happy once again, including Mom. And we all know when Mom is happy, we are all happy!!
