The all Epik Phoenix thread, let's hear your stories.

Got my Epik Phoenix about a month ago, and have been enjoying it immensely. I really like that I don't have to worry about over driving it. I have it set about 12 o'clock on the onboard amp and 0 on my receiver. I know I can turn it up more with ease, but really don't think I need to level my house at this time.

I sold my HSU VTF3-MK3, which had good sound, but couldn't handle some scenes very well. I bottomed it out a couple of times which made me jump out of my skin. So after changing my pants a couple of times I decided to upgrade to the Phoenix. I had read so many positive reviews on it, I knew that I couldn't go wrong.

I still have my HSU MBM-12 behind the couch for added effect, (best for gun shots).

The box my Phoenix came in was pretty beat up and had a big gash on the side, but to my surprise, the sub was un-harmed. I thought for sure there would be a nice dent on the side, but it was perfect.

Please tell your Phoenix stories, and Happy New Year.

I think the phoenix is a small niche. The sentinels seem to have a larger audience.

Do you like the color black THAT much??
IF I was a profiler I would definitely have to say...
Male
Mid 30's
Unmarried
Perfectionist
Clean Freak
Graduated College or University and works in a professional industry

Ok I'm just being silly. Nice sub and setup. Have you tried corner loading it or does that throw off your aesthetics?

I moved into a newly constructed townhouse last november. One of the reasons I bought it was because it had a finished basement available, perfect for a projection based ht and a small bar area. I got everything wired and installed and was pretty happy with the results (are we ever completly satisfied?) I put my svs 25-31 pci in the back of the space and my earthquake supernova mark IV12 up front. They did a nice job but left me wanting more. I wanted to bring in a third sub with a budget of 1k max, preferably a little less. I got VERY lucky and found a like new phoenix on a gon for a very good price. I made the 240 mile round trip and put it up front and moved the earthquahe nearfield between my seats and the side wall. I stll have some dialing in to do but the basement comes alive with lf. Pretty awesome. I no longer feel like something is missing, I will post a pic later

From the pics, it looks like the feet have sunk into the carpet leaving no air under the ports. I think it likes about an inch to couple tuning to the floor. I'd suggest a subdude, granite or tile slab under the sub.

i've had mine about 6 weeks now. it's an awesome sub. it goes low and has great punch. it reminds of a big block v8 engine. i previously had an infinity tss1100 sub which is actually a pretty good sub but the phoenix is obviously in another league. i'm still playing around with placement and recently discovered that room treatments (especially in the corners) are just as important as placement.

happy new year!

Think you bought the one I was considering... Now instead I am selling my dynasty rather than getting a phoenix to go with it

Been extremely pleased with my Phoenix. Performance, build, quality.....it's been great.

It takes up residence with my MFW, but I was thrilled with the Phoenix as a single sub.

Together with an MFW? Well.....WOW.....just WOW!

It is actually only about 3 feet from the corner and have tried it there as well;
I like the way it sounds where it sits in the picture.

For home theater I definitely like black. I like that I can really only see the TV screen when watching things; it draws me more into the movie not paying attention to all the speakers and such.

Perfectionist- only at times.
Clean Freak- more OCD.
Graduated College- nope.
Unmarried- yep.
Mid-thirties- nope, 31
Male- yep.

I will have to give it a try, thanks for the heads up. Do you think I will notice a difference?

I did a bit. I put a piece of granite under my Phoenix because it sunk into the carpet a bit too much.

Gov....I've been toying with the idea of putting some sort of foundation under my Phoenix, too.

Did you have the granite cut to specs? Did you have it polished? If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost?

Thanks!

mine is on carpet and i put some hard rubber coasters under the feet that raise it up to where it would be on a hard floor. works well. i just watched iron man last nite for the first time since upgrading to the phoenix. wow, what a blast. when he comes walking out of the cave, it felt like an earthquake in my living room . actually i don't know what an earthquake feels like but you get the idea.

Well, I am fortunate to work near a tile and granite manufacturer who ALWAYS has scrap pieces of granite in the trash Yes its polished, and the price was darn tootin good
Also, it matched the carpeting perfectly!

Gov....I'm going to have to go to my nearest granite vendor and see if I can get them to throw some scrap my way. Did you make yours exactly 22" square?

any phoenix owners watch terminator salvation yet? i'm planning on it but haven't got to it yet. i saw it at the theater and wasn't too impressed with the movie but the bassheads are raving about it for its lfe qualities.

Just a lowly Sentinel owner w/ Pheonix envy here but I had to add a BIG +1 to your expierence with that scene since I too recently watched it over again and that particular scene COMPLEEEETLEY cuaght me off guard!!! Lets just say many of my wall hangings either needed to be centered again or rehung.

I'd maybe consider buying it from you if you'd ship it.

I put 4 3x3 pieces of 3/4 inch solid oak coasters under mine, worked great at getting the vents outta the carpet..

I have Terminator Salvation and it didnt even strain my Phoenix/MFW combo in my 1300 sq foot space...at volume

Found some spare ceramic tiles laying around; these should do the trick.

Thanks for the tip guys.

^^^^ Let us know if you notice any SQ differences

good call on getting it up off the carpet to breathe a little
post #26 of 35
I 2nd that one. Just put my custom DIY SubDudes under my 2 Phoenixs and it did make a great bit of difference in the way the bass surrounded me.

I don't think it sounds any different, but it still rocks the room nonetheless. Very effortless and tight. At least I know it is breathing a little better now.

Vis....that's my set up, too...Phoenix + MFW. I find them very complementary. And, for the first time, have no want of anything more.

Terminator Salvation doesn't come anywhere close to straining either sub.

Gnocci,

It's rare that I would ever say that I like something more than your 18" sub, but I LOVE the fact that you not only took a picture while watching one of my favorite shows ever, the Cosby show, but one of my favorite episodes where Theo gets the home-made Gordon Gartrell knock off made by his sister.

I finally got a chance to put the phoenix through it's paces. Listened to some dts soundtracks with some serious lf. That is where the phoenix shines. It works well for "normal" use such as 2 channel music but when a scene comes on with some sub 20hz info, look out.
