Sweetwood 11.1 Theater destroy and rebuild - Page 24

How on earth did you get an Oppo BDP-93 AND a JVC RS40 already. You must have connections...

I got on the pre order for the 93 a bit ago and actually I got the X3 at a fantastic price and locally I got it right off the truck when it showed up. I almost sold the 93 but I am going to keep it now and get rid of my other players.

Adam,

2 of your 3 new purchases are on my wish list. I'm probably going to end up with the 3311 instead, since I don't have any intention of going beyond 5.1

In any event, it seems like you're 99% done, and it looks great. Do you think you can take some photos from the same positions that are in you're first post? I'd love to see some before/after comparisons.

If you hear noises at night coming from downstairs...just ignore them...its just me living in your basement.

I havent visited your thread in a few weeks but things are coming together nicely and I have to say the brightness of that image from the new pj is smooth. I love the creativity you used to wrap the speaker enclosure in the columns, i think it turned out great. Now the question is.....Are you for hire when I get to that point in my build? They will just be square so it should be easier.

It was so easy to do. All I did was used spray adhesive to keep it in place in small portions and worked from the center to the outside. I will put down some screen door screen first on the rest to eliminate the bow inward. I wish it would go faster. I plan to get some stuff done this weekend though but since I got new equipment most of my time will probably go to that.

Interesting, I looked into using sonotubes for curved column faces too - kind of hard to find a place that carries the real big ones though. I'm planning on something sort of Sandman-esque as far as column shape (rectangular back box, with a curved face / speaker grille) - but more of a gentle curve, like 1/4 slice from a larger sonotube vs. 1/2. Also pondering getting curved perforated metal to do the trick, but could get pricey (but would hold the fabric up nicely).

Maybe the inward bow on the fabric is due to too much tension horizontally - I'm thinking you'd want it stretched tightly vertically, but pretty loose horizontally.

I was going to use perforated metal but the price was just stupid high for what I was using it for.

OK, I'm thinking I should go ahead and add another Emotiva amp to the mix. I have the XPA-3 right now powering my front. I'm tetering back and forth on what to add. Either an XPA-5, UPA-5, or UPA7 since they will only be powering my surrounds. Any advice?

No opinions on the amplifier?

I have another question I hope someone can answer. I want to reduce the amount of heat that comes off the receiver so I figured that if I used an external amplifier for most of the channels along with some sort of fan to cool the top of the receiver or disperse the heat coming out that would do it and I wouldnt need so much rack space for ventilation. I was thinking of these from middle atlantic and leaving 1u of space above for the fans to move the air.

Any opinions on the amp to use or the fans?

Still no advice so I went ahead and bought a XPA-5 and UPA-5 to replace the XPA-3. I love the 3 but want to power more channels. I will be selling the XPA-3 if anyone is interested. While they have their sale going on I will sell it for $450 but once that's over the price will most likely go up. This thing is in near mint condition and slightly used.

I think doing this will reduce the heat dramatically on the receiver and the needed space to cool it.

I'd recommend selling the XPA-3 and buying a new XPA-5 and UPA-5

Or buy some Outlaw (aka ATI) amps. I'm pretty impressed with mine and the price is fantastic.

Too late Moggie ;p. Their ordered and hopefully not going to take too long to get. I really loved how the XPA-3 brought out the fullness and easy listening into my speakers so I know I'm gonna love the new combo.

BTW, I am so jealous of the new screen build. Any chance you want to make me one. Much easier to make two that two people making one;p

Adam,

I've been looking at some cooling options for my rack as well. I stumbled on these affordable options:

I can't afford 3u of space but I might be able to do 2u and that one has a display. I'll have to measure tonight. Thanks for the info. Do you know if that plugs into molex or a regular plug?

Sounds like the first rule of government spending - "why build one when you can build two for twice the price?" Trivia: anyone know what movie that quote is from?

I wanted to put a glass door on my cabinet so I'm somewhat in a similar situation. I was thinking of just lifting the rack off the ground and putting a vent to allow airflow in below the rack (in the drywall). Then mounting the 3U fans in the drywall above the rack if it works out. Not sure if that might work for you. Man your offer is tempting on the XPA...but I'm trying to conserve cash for the theater build.

"Contact" with Jodie Foster. Lines spoken by John Hurt as SR Hadden. One of my favorites.

Question. I plan to attach the plywood soon as possible and was going to use liquid nails instead on roof felt. I figured the liquid nails would create one large board rather than the felt preventing two boards from rubbing. I know that gg is the best option but I dont have enough of it to do the whole stage.

Adam,

Did you end up leaving that top row empty of insulation for the bass trapping?

I actually filled the top row as well. For bass trapping you need insulation for best results from what I read and am told.

I went with the 2U coolerguys unit. I like having the option to see the temp. I also bought an alarm as well to sound if it gets too hot.

Thanks Adam.

Let us know how you like the 2U Coolerguys unit and how quiet it is.

You have GOT to love when you hear those words from the mrs. I hear it all the time and all I can do is smile....inside of course, NEVER on the outside.

Time to bunker down and finish the theater. I realize now that I need to hire it done. There are so few of things that need done but I just don't have the time for them. I have someone coming in tomorrow and maybe have everything done within two weeks.

I also need to get my unraid server back online so I can start ripping my movies to it. I'll try to get someone out this week for that. Has anyone been successful in ripping 3D movies to a hard drive and playing them? I got the newer version of TMT to play them and a 3D supported video card already. I have been using DVDFab for my ripping so far but have not tried the 3D feature and was hoping for some advice.

Thanks everyone. Now if I could get the worker to show up when he said he would and then get this damn HTPC running right I would be in heaven. I'll try to get some current pics up soon
