tapatalk support?

Thread Starter
I'd like to request AVS support tapatalk so that it can be more easily browsed from an iPhone, Android etc.

The server side plug in is free:

We looked at it and declined due to the fact they charge the end user to simply make a post.

but they have a FREE version for read-only ... and a more full version for 2.99 or so ... it's WORTH it .. PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE. It doesn't cost AVS anything except time for installing - right?

if you haven't used it, the avforums.com use it as well - it's a good app - i've heard some bugs but very friendly for iphone users (and I'm sure the other smartphones)

We do have a skin for the iPhone in case you were not aware. At the bottom of any page you can switch to it.

We choose not to go this route as all the data must pass though their servers including account information. This is not something we would care to allow to happen for safety reasons. Added to that if you did want to use it to post, you are charged and that is not something we would feel good about.

thanks david. I'll check that out - actually, I've been using my iphone to browse the site & it's not that bad ... and maybe that is the iphone skin that I've been using but didn't know it. I wouldn't like all that info passing thru their servers/services either & didn't realize that...
the iphone skin seems nice. thanks for pointing me to it - I hadn't seen it & had been using the regular web site

just for ref - and I have no vested interest in tapatalk other than I use the app on my phone for other forums ...

this thread had similar concerns

from the thread:

"the login has absolutely nothing to do with us and our server, it is the same fashion that you use your safari / mobile web browser to login. so rest assured it is as safe as using your web browser."

They charge the user for the full app with posting capabilities. They do not charge per-post, which is kinda what it seems like is being implied.

That said, it is a great app - GREAT app. I use it frequently with my reef forums and a variety of other sites.

Pretty sure this site isn't SSL'd, doesn't sell anything, and is publicly indexed, so the security issue is one of trusting the tapatalk folks. Understandable, but unfortunate.

Tapatalk is now available or in beta for most major mobile platforms and is EXCELLENT. Way better than using a web browser on a desktop, in fact.

As a large community site, I'd hope AVS forums would communicate their concerns to the authors of tapatalk and try to come to an agreement to enable its use.

+1 here.

+1 here too

Just got directed to this thread after inquiring about the app. I love using this app for other forums I frequent. The navigation makes things so much easier. Love having my frequent boards in one apps and the tabbed interface (especially favorites) on my iPhone.

I don't see the cost issue either considering it's an optional thing for users. We can choose if we want to use it or not. I already own it for other boards.
Yes please add it!
+1 here as well.

I have Tapatalk running on SatelliteGuys and the users love it, I personally use it all the time on my iPhone and now my iPad.

In addition the latest version of Tapatalk supports the droid and even blackberry users.

I give it 2 thumbs up!
I admit, I use it elsewhere and find it incredibly worthwhile. It trumpcards damn near every other way to browse from a mobile device. I mean, it demolishes every other way.

Hi All...

Please be aware we are currently working on a iPhone app for AVS. The App will be free.

You see, one issue we run into with this site is the amount of customizations we needed to make to the software to work with the traffic we have. Vb was never developed with large sites in mind. As such, we can not just add something like is mentioned here based on issues it can make. Like searching for example, as we do not use the standard search.

While I understand the modifying that goes on for large sites such as yours, other admins I know, even those with larger sites with plenty of modifcations, that have installed the free plugin have said it worked just fine. That installing it would be some major headache is probably not the case.

Or you could adopt Forum Runner, knowing that TiVoCommunity has just added it.

As David said, AVS does not use the standard search, TiVoCommunity does. That's just one of the many hurdles, but it's being worked on.
All good things come...

Oh.

Hi Mike
I'll tell you one reason I'm happy AVS has not added tapatalk... it's because MANY of it's users refuse to turn off the sig that comes turned on as the default. So you have to read...

"Sent from my Nexus One using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk"

...everytime someone posts with it. I don't miss that at all. It puts that message into the main body of the post which tricks you into reading it EVERY single time.

Maybe an Android version next?
Posting this from the AVS iPhone app. Getting closer. Once we are good to go we then need to get it approved by the iStore. That can take a month. The app will be free.

And yes a android verizon will be next.

Now that I agree with, I turned it off in mine... then the admins on a few boards I visit made changes on their side to prevent that. lol.

That's good to know, I didn't know anyone other than the user could shut that sig off. IMO, it's that sig that hurts tapatalk adoption. With these new apps though, maybe tapatalk is just redundant? I'd prefer to use a dedicated AVS Android app myself. I was mildy interested in tapatalk but with David saying these new dedicated apps are on the way, I see no point in tapatalk.
I'm the opposite, as an iPhone user I have like 9 pages of apps as it is. I'd prefer to be able to use one app for multiple forums rather than a dedicated app for each.
Depends on the app, imo. If done right, imo, a dedicated app will always be superior to a single app that shoe horns in so many forums.

I'm an owner of a fairly large forum myself and have been looking into Tapatalk for better mobile device support for my site, I just haven't jumped on ship more so because no one at Tapatalk will discuss how security is handled and that worries me. I don't want everyone at Tapatalk knowing all my users usernames and password or worse, my username and password.

Woodrow - while the user might be the only person you can turn on or off the sig. An admin of the forum could easily add a forum replacement that looks for a certain line of text and then replaces it with something else, say another line of text or even replace it with a space thus removing the annoying sig.

Testing iPhone app with an attachment right from the camera.

Very cool David. Any chance you can post a screen shot of the app running?

At any rate it appears to be coming along nicely
post #27 of 128
Not sure what that would do. But in any case, attached is the splash screen.

I like it, nice choice for the splash

Hello All...

Just wanted to announce it in this thread first that the new AVS iPhone app has been added to the app store! Search for AVSForum and off you go!

Thanks!
Just to let you know. When you go to avsforum in safari on your iPhone there is a popup that tells you about the app, but then it goes to the paid version of forumrunnner rather than directly to the avsforum app. I bought the forum runner app only later realizing that it did not include avsforum and that had to be downloaded separately.
