Why is 4K resolution such a jump over 1080P

Hey guys,

Wasn't sure where to put this question, seemed the most logical place (as theirs other 4K chat here).

I was looking at the Cineramax website, at there Superkontrast 4K projector in particular. They have this following comparison posted,



Why is 4K resolution so much bigger than 2K? I don't understand enough about these new resolutions, but i think about what "tv lines" are, 2048 (2k) should be twice as big as 1080, and 4096 (4k) should be twice as big as 2k, not 4 times or more like suggested in the pic? Can someone explain this to me?

4k = 4096 pixels WIDE
2k = 2048 pixels WIDE
1080p = 1920 pixels WIDE

So it is measuring height vs. width, but the graphic is accurate.

Ah of course, width, not TV lines! Seems like 2K though isnt really double that of 1080?

Another way to look at it is how much bigger is a 2"x2" square over a 1"x1" square? The 2"x2" square is twice as wide, but has 4 times the area.

1080p= 1920x1080 (~2.1 million pixels)
2k= 2048x1080 (generally) (~2.2 million pixels)
4K= 4096x2160 (generally) (~8.8 million pixels)

So you can see that 1080p and 2k are more or less equivalent resolutions. There is nothing double about it, and whoever said that is grossly mistaken. 4k is naturally quadruple the resolution of 1080p/2k.

4K is about twice the resolution in each direction horizontally and vertically, than 2k or 1080p, so the drawing is accurate, you could either call it twice as many TV lines or twice the supported maximum spatial frequency in either direction if you think that way, or 4-times the resolution if you think both directions, just depends on your terminology and way of thinking about it.

You know what i thought? That 2K was "xxxx X 2048" and hence doubling that of 1080, that's why i didn't understand the diagram.

Thanks guys for clearing it up! Makes complete sense now. That's why some people refer to 4K as "4Kx2K"!!
