Too many options for my new space, which one do you pick??

Hello to all,

Well in a couple of weeks we will be moving to a new house which has a pretty "slim" space for the basement. Here are the dimensions.

10'8" X 21' with very low 6'7" ceilings in half of the room and 7' for the rest of the room.

Here is my equipment:

-Klipsch Corwall speakers 82 build date (love these things, but will cause so many problems in the install)
-Temp DIY center, large quality components used. Sounds very good to me. (will most likely be changed down the road)
-4 Saphire SAT1500 surround speakers (bought because product was disc, sound very good in my small condo next to my panny plasma)
-DIY huge 15" Sonotube sub
-Energy 8' sub (used in condo)
-Yamaha HTR 6160 receiver
- PS3
- SA HD cable box
-Panny PT AE4000

I don't have a screen yet because it is part of my dilemma.

My cornwalls are 25.25" wide and 36" high making almost impossible to put them beside the screen on the 10'8" wall I was planning to use.

Here are the options I am considering:

-Fake wall to put speakers behind with AT electric screen in front (Plasma mounted on wall) using 10'8" wall (120" screen)

-Same thing with fixed AT screen no plasma

- Use the 21' wall with approriate screen size for 10' viewing distance. Eliminate AT screen used regular fixed screen

- Change cornwalls to something smaller that can be placed below screen on 10'8" wall and used regular fixed screen, slightly smaller than planned 120"

- Change cornwalls and get smaller speakers placed behind 120" AT screen

The problem is my budget is moderate, after spending the cash for the projector spending another $2000 on the seymore screen is killing me... (although decent rpice).

I would'nt mind changing the speakers, but I don't to sacrifice any sound quality by buying less than stellar speakers.

I attached the pictures of the basement to give you an idea.

So after all this, I guess I am looking for a little advice on what to do with my slim room and equipment.

Thanks for any input

Considering your options, I wouldn't think 10'8" is enough room to have a screen and speakers up front, and much left over for viewing. So...that leaves the false-wall on the 10'8" side, and 21' to play with.

120" is plenty big for the screen; spend what you need on the AT for now, keep the gear and upgrade as needed. 21' will give you plenty of options for seating, or a bar/kitchen area in the back, etc.

Do you think placing the cornwalls so close to the side walls will present any problems?

If so, how much of the problem would putting absorption panels solve?

thanks for the help

I agree with CD, stretch your budget to go acoustically transparent.

Here's what I did with my 11 foot by 21 foot space.

Speakers placed right in the corners will not sound as good as those placed correctly

I third the suggestion for going AT screen wall.

You won't need to place the cornwalls near the sides of the room that way.

The only trouble I would see with that, is the screen wall may interfere with the doors on the side of your room.

As for the Plasma, I would just toss that in another room, and leave this room dedicated for Home Theatre, but that is more of a subjective decision than one that should be asked of a forum. Using a motorized AT screen would be an option, it just seems like a lot of work would need to be put into the rest of the AT screen wall at that point to make it look good when the screen is up.

thanks guys,

I forgot to mention that the old, very ugly, wall unit in place is sort a false wall, I have just about 2 feet behind there to the concrete non insulated, so the new false wall should be just a little more forward in such a way to end flush with the door trim. The door also opens in the other room so that is good.

Scopeguy, I really like your setup, I actually read your construction thread before posting and that is where I got the insoparation to do what I want to on the 10'8" wall. May I ask if the side walls immedietly next to the screen are absorption panels? I've been trying to read the accoustics thread, but there is just so much in there for a novice such as myself to consider. I keep reading conflicting posts, I feel as though I must take notes or someting to untangle such a thread. I really have no clue right on where to place the panels and what size to have them. some people say to insulate the screen wall, some say not to. I not sure with the AT screen if I should or not, and if the side wall need full panels or none because my ceilling is so low. If you can clarify very roughly, just to put on the right track I would appreciate.

I guess I will enjoy my plasma in another room and go with the fixed AT screen on the 10'8" wall. I get to keep my big cornwalls this way, I really like the sound from these things. Mind you I have always used them in a 2 channel set-up with no sub, wonder how they will sound in a 7.1 setup with 15" Dayton Titanik sonotube.

I will try and post some decent pics once I get started. If youy have any other suggestions, please share.

The panels on the side wall are 1" OC703. The front wall is treated with 7 inches of OC703. If I had room I probably would have done the more standard 2 inches of OC703 on the front wall and triangular corner bass traps.

My rough understanding of room acoustics is that treating the entire front wall and the side wall first reflection (from the front speakers) should be treated. Also, many will treat the entire back wall. The side walls should also be treated below ear level. This is again the general gist of what I have picked up about DIY acoustical treatment. Clearly hiring someone who knows what they are doing and will do calculations and/or measurements may lead to better results.
