Help: Panny AE-700 died?

Hey guys,

Quick question about what happened to my panny ae-700 a few minutes ago , i turned it on to watch a DVD , while the dvd was playing all the typical FBI warnings and stuff , my PJ suddenly turned off, just like that , no lights are on, not even the usual red "stand-by" light is on. its like its not even plugged to the wall...

and now as i began writing this , it suddenly turned on again... , lasted a good 10s and then off again with no lights whatsoever on it.

i had thought it was a blown fuze, but now that i saw it turn back on again (a blown fuze wouldnt let it turn back on) im leaning towards the PS...

What do ya'll think?

Althought its an ae-700 , its still on its first bulb with around 2200 hrs on it on low-lamp mode.

(back on again as i wrote that last paragragh.... , and off again now.... wth? )

It's rare for a projector to blow a fuse. It happens, but not that often. What you may be experiencing is a lamp that has aged to the point where it can't maintain "fire" and shut down. Most projectors, when that happens, have to be restarted. Yours could be a self-starter, don't know. It could be an electronic fault, but the only way to know for sure is to replace the lamp. If it isn't the lamp, then the potential cost of repair may be prohibitive.

I don't think if the bulb was going it would cause the symtoms your having. It sounds more like the ballast or power supply. I no expert by any means so it could be almost anything.

Good luck

thought i'd post an update

hadn't been back in the forums for the last couple of weeks.

after the initial problems that night, i unplugged my PJ for the night.

plugged it in the next day , it worked fine... watched a full movie (actually an episode of House Season 5 ) . picture looked as good as ever. but when i was done watching it i turned it off (like i always do) but instead of going into its usual 'cool down' process , the projector just went directly to off , like if I had unplugged the cord

next day i turned it on again but then it turned itself off after 10 minutes (again , no standby light or nothing , it went directly to off like if no power was getting to it).

so i finally called panasonic and asked for instructions ( i wanted to send it to the heartland service center , which from what i've read here , is the best one there is), but sadly as i live in Mexico , the panny rep told me i had to send it to a service center here in Mexico.

so i did, fast forward 2 weeks to today , i got my pj back. they didnt know whats wrong with it , they suggested changing the "mother board" which they said would run me almost $400 bucks but still they had no guarantee that that would fix it, which to me is stupid , i can get a used pj for that much on ebay.

right now im debating whether to try (again ) and get panasonic to redirect me to a service center in the states (i live near the border so shipping there shouldnt be an issue and i also have a PO on the US side of the border where i receive all my online purchases , so shipping back shouldnt be an issue for panasonic either.) or order some spare parts myself and hopefully be lucky.

from what i've read im leaning towards a faulty power supply. maybe even the ballast module but not sure what that even does.

my issue sounds a lot like the on/off problem i've seen here regarding this projectors but im afraid of buying some spare parts only to find out im totally off in thinking its the PS.

hard to believe that a PJ with only 2200 hours on it (on eco-mode) died and is beyond salvaging

What ever is wrong is going to be expensive to fix. The simplest thing is replacing the bulb, and that will run a few hundred. It could be the power supply, or some regulator that controls power to the projector; both will be hundreds of dollars to fix.

Unless you are willing to try another bulb, with no guarantees, I think its time to spend your $ on a new projector.

I agree with the service center in Mexico - it sounds symptomatic of a main board failure. However, as stated above, any fix will probably not be worth it - whether it's a power supply, ballast or main board. Unfortunately it looks like you're going to be in the market for a new projector.

I'd bet you a new bulb that it is not the bulb. Almost anything but the bulb - and the fuse, as you noted. TF Ghost is right - probably.

It sounds like some kind of loose connection in the power, and that probably has to be something with the main board - maybe a tiny crack or an imperfect solder connection. Before you throw away your projector, you might touch a soldering iron to the various solder joints you can find. That is a long shot & it is easy to cook something, but if you dare, it might fix a cold solder joint.

After reading this thread from a few years ago from several people that had a problem very similar to mine.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=652343

i decided to try my luck, and ordered a new Power supply module, hope that fixes it.

wish me luck

Can you send me a PM after you replace the PS? I dont come here as often as I used to, and might forget about this altogether if I dont get a direct PM.

I also have one(700u) collecting dust with the same symptoms. Paid $100 to have it diagnosed as a faulty lamp, but I plugged it in one day after sitting for 2 Years, and it ran all day without any problems. When I tried it the next day, it when back to powering on and off by itself.

I suspected it was the power supply as well, because the red power light flickers on and off.

Problem is, I have a Mits HC-3000 that I really like now, and would probably not want to go back to a Panny, LCD or smooth screen.

If anyone can use this for parts, let me know if you are interested, comes with box, remote, manual etc.

Does anyone know if the 700u and 900u use the same ballast? I need a ballast for a 900u.

3 days later and my PJ is still working great so it definitely was the Power supply module (P-module)
