Scope kids/family movies

Hey folks. Well it is snowy and cold here, so kind of odd to have a new post in this section, but I was chatting with some friends and we started talking about this... I'm looking for some good scope movies for the coming year. Since we show movies for families, they need to be rated PG. So many of the movies are 16:9, finding good scope content seems tough.

I know we're going to show Cars this season, that one is scope. Maybe G-Force as well, I know that's also scope. I never really paid attention to aspect ratio for these flicks before, but since we're now running a big scope setup outside I'm now looking at the aspect ratio. Do you know of some others off-hand?

Technically, I don't think there is a single aspect ratio that means scope. The ratios between 2.35:1 and 2.40:1 cover the category, at least to me.

He didn't say HD, he wanted 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio

but aren't we in the age of HD I mean large image projectors look kidna crappy with 480p, I guess animation may be an exception

HD is always preferred, but not a requirement outside. Even for me, as a guy who brings out the subs and a full surround sound setup, the reality is that for the rest of the folks who come it is all about the fun of watching a movie outside.

Outdoor presentations on a good projector - even regular old DVD look anything but crappy outside - I think they look spectacular, and so do most, if not all, of my guests. I have received numerous comments from people that assume I am running bluray discs, and the fact is that I have YET to run a bluray disc outside (I could easily since I run everything through my ps3), but just haven't yet.

why is that the case though? The eye cannot determine resolution differences if they are sitting very far away, so I suppose that is the reason.

Because inside you can clearly see Star wars Episode 4 looks crappy on the projector, HEHEHE. Damn you Lucas, bring us bluray already old man!

So do the guests look spectacular, too? =D

Outdoor theater is a different animal. I have the whole HD setup inside for the videophile in me. Outside we show SD DVDs on a piece of white fabric on a 12' wide screen. I picked up a cheap upscaling player and used 5.1 surround system I keep on a cart in the garage. A group of friends sitting outside having a great time watching a BIG movie offsets any PQ shortcomings. I'm the only one who notices the picture isn't as good as inside. Can't measure fun.

that is a superior username adult beverage! Any pics of your outdoor setup?

Inside, I have 14 ft wide screen. =( Outside must be MORE!

No pictures but lots of similar (and much larger) setups at Backyardtheater dot com. I also us a spandex-like material for the screen. It allows you to do front or rear projection, depending on the set up you need (in garage when cold/beside swimming pool/under tent when raining). My screen frame packs down into a ski bag for poles and ski boot bag for connections so it is portable.

Outside must be more, indeed! That's why last year I went to a 23 foot wide scope screen. :-)

Bigger is usually better, but you need to have the seating distance available. We watched a football game last fall in HD and had to move back. A bit overwhelming at our original seating location. Moved in November and new yard/neighborhood will allow for a bigger screen. Redesigns for screens seem to be neverending. BTW, football with 5.1 Dolby Digital outside had us looking for people clapping and blowing whistles beside/behind us. Very immersive.

35 feet is still doable. Just have to scale it to size and sit closer. Need to check PJ placement and throw distance, along with potential seating locations when sizing the screen. Smaller venue allows for lower volumes, a benefit if neighbors are an issue.

Heck, I find the same thing in my living room 5.1 and 65" mits DLP TV. Every once in while someone will shout and I turn around. Gets me two or three times during a game.

I've turned around to shush noisy kids at our outdoor showings only to realize it's part of the sound track.

Just picked up Cloudy Meatballs. We try to do 4 a year, so this year I have Cars, Monsters vs. Aliens, and Cloudy so far. Might do G-Force as the last one, I don't want only animated flicks... Thanks for the suggestions so far...

i am going to watch cloudy meatball tonight, i heard it's also an adult movie. i'm hoping its like a bug's life where it's not only for kids b/c i'm an adult

Neither my son (5) or daughter (10) cared for G-Force when grandparents took them. Others they've liked recently are Bedtime Stories, Night at the Museum, Nim's Island, Nanny McPhee and the original Willy Wonka.

You can show chronicles of narnia. I am not trying to limit you to animated, bu when you said children's films thats the first thing that came to mind.

Well spider-man 2 is scope. you have superman 1 & 2 (i purposely left out 3,4 and returns). If you believe the creator then star wars is really a children's story told through pretty visuals.

I ran "The Sandlot" a season ago. It can be found in widescreen. We had good luck with "RV" (with Robin Williams). Another classic, a little long but we also had good response was "The Incredible Mr. Limpet." Also "Daddy Daycare." "Wild Hogs" worked pretty well too.
