Abstract from Pioneer's 2009 Annual Report:

- "The Company resolved to transfer its patents for plasma display panels and modules to Panasonic Corporation at the Board of Directors’ meeting held on April 28, 2009. The two companies had executed the agreement on May 15, 2009. This constitutes part of the business restructuring effort in accordance with plans for a full withdrawal from the display business."

So, hopefully the new VT25 and G25 are the sons of the above purported Viera-Kuro marriage (Panasonic, out of their own self esteem, will never say that they now use Pioneer technology); if so, these new sets might be the new HDTV holy grail: last year's Kuros' deep blacks plus this year's new tech panels' higher intensity illumination, it's like having local dimming LED LCDs' contrast ratios and brightness without any of their cons (blooming, bad off-center PQ, laggy pixels). If they manage to sell them at even lower prices than the V10 and G10 (Hey Pany, remember, the recession is not over yet!), well, it's time we all hail "King Kuro is dead, long live Queen Viera!"

Frankly I do not give a hoot on how thin the panel is, how much porn people can stream straight to their TV, or 3-D for that matter; although I understand why some folks may desire these features. All I want is a worthy successor to my Kuro by surpassing it in actual picture quality rather than bogus numbers that are not observable in real world viewing sessions. Unless I want to watch a single pixel be retina scorchingly bright.

Crossing my fingers that black levels do not become nerfed over time or incorrect color reproduction.

PS I do agree Panasonic TVs bezel designs leave a fair amount to be desired. I like Samsungs 860 bezel, slick and simple.

It's about what I expected. I really thought they would improve the bezels, something like last years Samsungs or the new plasmas LG just announced.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, is there any inside info you can talk about now? Obviously these contrast ratio numbers are BS, but i do have a few questions...

1) Do all the 1080p models have the new discharge method/AR filter/better minimum luminance? They list the V/G at 5mil:1 and the S at only 2mil.

2) On the website they state that they have developed a new filter that will keep blacks blacker and less reflections ect, is this just the same AR filter the Z1 had like you said in the past or is this something completely different?

3) So there is no "thin" plasma this year? I'm assuming they are all 2-3" thick?

I thought Panasonic bought the Kuru technology from Pioneer

I love the panny but their designs remind me of a appliance. I like how sleek and modern Samsungs look.

they did but I do not know if they implemented them yet on these models or if they are going to come out with like another version of the z1 but with incorporated Kuro tech... thats what I hope they do. Like a 65 inch signature type ... for now i am happy I did not wait for 2010.. these TVs are better but I think 2011 or 2012 will be where that kuro tech comes into play... pleas someone correct me if I am wrong.

to me it seems like the new v series is my v10 with bret the hitman hart glasses...

Wow, some of the whingeing in this thread is hilarious. To me the press release is totally appealing esp. for the 3D plasmas.

Retrospectively I'm glad I didn't spring for a plasma in '09 ... after a year in purgatory watching a cheap LCD it's time to bust open the piggy bank for a 58VT25 in '10.

It will have been worth the agonizing wait!

If Panasonic can take just one thing from Pioneer, they should copy their bezels. I thought 2008 was all right, 2009 was pretty ugly save for the Z1, but 2010 looks absolutely horrific.

Meh i think i'll pass on the 13G Panasonics.

I'll stick with the 12G till the 14G come out.

I haven't been following the 3d development much but this article seems to suggest we still have some ways to go. If they haven't even finalized the standard, I'm not sure I would drop several grands on it.

i hear ya... here is the scenerio I am hoping for... a 2011 panny with kuro tech at 65inches for around 5K...that would be nice

I know blacks get all the glory but finally having whites that actually look white is what I've been waiting for.

I think a lot of the harshest complaints come from people who were never SERIOUSLY considering a 2010 Panasonic Plasma in the first place.

If you don't like the new panasonics why don't you just wait for the 2010 Kuros?
