Audyssey dynamic volume is a great work around for this issue. I'm still in the process of looking at a new receiver with pre-outs to upgrade to.
Are your mains set to small? If not, you definitely should try that. That works better for me, even with big mains and separate amps.
Also, you could try increasing the crossover point, to take the load off your receiver.
Also, if that bottom end bump is giving you trouble, you could filter it down with the sub's high-pass filter settings.
A couple things that seemed to help me:
1) Focusing the mic positions around the main listening position, rather than taking readings from every seat.
2) Previously, I had set the subwoofer level to +2-4db, but it was better at 0db after I enabled DynamicEQ.
