Oppo BDP-83/93/95/103/105 DLNA/UPnP thread - Page 13

Hi there. Looking for some help from the more knowledgeable. I have my oppo 83 bridged to my home wireless network. The problem is when I go to the "My Network" page and click on "My Network Search", nothing is found. I have access to blu tv and online content with blu ray movies so the wireless bridge is connecting to my network. I'd like to stream music from my XP based computer to the oppo to play in the other room, but my network just isn't showing up under "My Network". Also, in WMP 11...please don't laugh...when I check the "share media to" box, it doesn't list any devices to share to. I presume that the oppo should be listed there. Any ideas?

I tried using the Oppo DLNA successfully using foobar decoding .flac to PCM and streaming from a Netgear ReadyNAS. I haven't tried video yet, as I couldn't find a codec that worked. The problem for me right now is that -- and I've sent Oppo a lengthy email awhile back explaining this -- Oppo's interface is damn near impossible to work with.

For one, I have a projector that I rather not turn on every time I listen to music. Secondly, the advantage of computer software is the ease of control -- namely the mouse and keyboard -- in scrolling through large amounts of files. Unfortunately, the average A/V remote control lacks such a wheel, and going through hundreds of artists is a tedious process.

What Oppo needs to do is to enable media rendering functionality in order for an external media controller such as foobar or JRivers to recognize. This would, of course, also allow an iPhone plugin to work, and nearly transform the Oppo from a blu-ray player with peripheral functions into a networking giant!

And it shouldn't be that hard to implement as well... this is all a part of DLNA specification, unlike .flac file support, for example.

Anyways, Oppo said they'd look into it, but I'm not getting my hopes up. The SE upgrade would be 10 times as useful if this were done correctly.

I've got some links here: How do I get DLNA working? You're probably going to have to follow them and dig into the diagnostics for your setup.

The Oppo will only show what DNLA servers are active, so if it shows nothing then no server is active. That points to your WMP as the problem. Can't help you with that. Maybe just skip to the chase and try one of the free DNLA servers?

I finally got Mediatomb runing on my WD MyBookWorld NAS but when I play an mp3 on my BDP83 from the menus/list of mp3 files under Network/MediaTomb/PC Folder it plays that one song and stops instead of going on to the next mp3 file. Anyone else running MediaTomb having this issue?

Hey thanks for the tips folks. WMP has driven me mad in the past, and is destined to continue to do so. Before I try another program, I'll try and get WMP working...failing that, any recommendations for a free server that works best (in your opinion(s)) for streaming music? Most of my music files are either mp3, aac, or wav.
Also, to be clear, when I select "My Network Search" on the OPPO, it's searching for services on my computer (like WMP) that are "broadcasting" to my wireless network as opposed to searching for my actual network (SSID). Is this correct?
Thanks again.

That's correct. See the 1st post in this thread for specifics on a few server programs. The consensus seems to be that none of them do all things well.

I was able to see wmp11 and my files and folders but none of the files would play. So I dumped it.

Mediatomb 0.12.0 & Ubuntu 9.10 working fine for mp3 here. I do experience this problem with flac files transcoded to pcm. Is your NAS transcoding mp3 files?

With just a couple of days of my free Asset UPnP trial run remaining I'd just like to check if anyone ever got either the Files/Folders browsing option or Internet Radio to work properly (in Linux using Wine).

Browsing by Artist, Folder or Playlist works just fine, but whenever I've tried the folder browsing option in the past none of my music plays and then all the other browsing options stop working to I have to go and reset Asset for anything to work at all. Very annoying - especially as a lot of my music isn't tagged and my actual folders are all arranged so neatly.

And then Internet Radio just doesn't work. I can display the stations on the Oppo but they don't play. I've had Internet radio working before in Twonky (I think).

I never tried browsing by folder, but I could never get internet radio to work either. No matter what I tried, the Oppo either displayed "not supported" or just flat out wouldn't play. Heck even my regular music files won't play at times. It just scrolls from one song to the next without playing a single one at times. I guess I have to accept that DLNA/UPnP is an experimental feature at this time and hiccups are to be expected.

No browsing by folder in Asset, and no immediate hope of a fix. "Maybe in the next version of the program" is the best answer anyone has got. My advice is don't pay for it and let them know why.

I installed a pre-compiled and preconfigured Mediatomb 0.10.0 for the Mybookworld NAS runing on BASH via PuTTY from my Windows 7 64-bit system. Sorry I'm linux illiterate. Looking at the config file I don't see any transcoding. On my computer, I have Asset UPnP, Nero Mediahome 4, and the PS3 Media Server all working fine with my Oppo 83 via a NetGear WNHDEB111100 5GHz Wireless-N HD Gaming/Bridge Networking Kit. The Mediatomb Web UI also works fine and I can brouse the files and folders correctly on Mediatomb's menu on the Oppo. It just won't continue to play the next song. One thing I've noticed on the Oppo is that the mp3 song's elapsed time counter is counting up correctly but the number to the right of it seems to be the sum total of all my NAS's shared files time 86:26:13?

Has anyone had experience with Twonky support? I bought the media server after playing the demo for a week, but since installing the actual licensed version I haven't got it working right. Scans the media folder but then says there is no media. Support has responded with a few questions over the past week, but without a solution. I'm wondering whether there is a method other than their email tool?

Most of the action seems to be on their forums, linked from their main page.

I second this. MEDIA RENDERING is the killer feature. No need for Oppo to mess around with a difficult interface but allow for remote streaming.

Experiencing the same two issues using J. River Media Center (JRMC) and haven't found a fix yet. Playback settings set to gapless playback but the tracks just freeze at the end and don't advance. Only tested on Flac files, not MP3. Also getting a strange large number for what should be total track time, although not remotely close to the total # of hours of Flac files that I have. But it could potentially be the total number of hours associated with all of my MP3 files... Not having either of these issues when using Asset but other problems with Asset are worse so I am currently still favoring JRMC.

Please!!

I encourage more people to write to Oppo and request the media rendering functionality. This would also allow third parties, like all the wonderful people who made foobar plug-ins, to improve compatibility with controlling the Oppo. It would allow people to choose their own interfaces at no additional work from the Oppo staff.

We need to let Oppo know this is a highly desired feature!

It would probably put the Logitech Squeezebox out of business.

I was wondering whether anybody has an issue with BDP-83 after streaming files through DLNA server. I use TVersity to play files from my NAS box. After I watch the movie through network, if I put a disk on the tray, BDP-83 does not recognize and does not play it unless I turned the machine off and on again...

Anybody has similar experience.....

I second this, tested on foobar. There is a lengthy pause after each track, except I did get it to advance. It felt like the Oppo software was trying to load each track, maybe it didn't have enough memory.

Using foobar as the media server, and then JRivers or WMP11 as the controller, .flac files play flawlessly with no pause, so something is definitely going on on Oppo's side.

I've had limited success transcoding M4A (and WAV) to play on the Oppo.

Specifically:

PS3 Media Server --> ALWAYS STATIC. Does not transcode using settings on page 1. I run it on Linux/Ubuntu

Asset (run under Wine) --> Only one that works; m4a (apple lossless) transcodes to LPCM and plays fine. takes maybe 30-60 seconds for first item to play; after that, no delay and I can nav from song to song.

MediaTomb --> transcoding works using VLC, but play back is in half-speed. no idea why.

---

I prefer PS3 Media Server, but so far, unless I transcode to MP3, it just doesn't work. Everything comes out as white noise.

Any ideas?

Note that I'm first trying to get audio working. video is another story....

Make sure you're using the latest build of MC14 available.

Advance to next track is not something that the DLNA protocol does well. We're still tinkering with it.

Normally you would return to the Home screen after backing out of the Network screens. Once there, you might need to select "Movie" to start playback of a disc.

If you don't go home you cannot choose movie to play... I followed those steps...

Hi,

Great overview of media servers, but there's one more that works well with Oppo and supports transcoding from/to any media format. It's called Mezzmo (disclaimer: I work for Conceiva, the makers of Mezzmo). It would be great if you could add it to your review of media servers and I'd be more than happy to provide any necessary information.

Thanks,

Dennis

Have you tried ffmpeg instead of VLC?

Looks nice, but Windows only?
