Record DVD in HD?

My father-in-law has a big screen HDTV and a HD camcorder. The camcorder records onto a flash drive. He is currently recording his videos to DVD using an old DVD recorder and they really look like crap.

Is there anyway for him to record his videos to DVD so that they can be played back in HD?

What are the alternatives? Please bear in mind that he is not very technology-literate.

TIA!

Best way is to use a PC. The HD camcorder is most likely recording in AVCHD format which can be burned onto DVD-R but it still requires a BluRay player for HD playback.

Most newer camcorders record in AVCHD. Many Blu-ray players will playback these HD files from a flash drives and/or SD cards. All Blu-ray players will play AVCHD media on a DVD.

No DVD players can play HD files.

If the camcorder is a Sony or JVC you may be able to purchase a small standalone DVD burner that will take the AVCHD format material from your camcorder and write it to a standard DVD, again only playable in a BR player.
I know the Sony only works with certain Sony camcorders, I know very little of the JVC and I'm not sure if it's even made anymore.
You might check the camcorder forum on AVS for more specifics.

So, let me see if I understand correctly... if the camcorder records in AVCHD (it does), AVCHD can be burned to a standard (non-BR) DVD-R and played back (only) in a BR player and the play back will be in HD?

The camcorder is a Canon CNVHF10. It looks like Canon has a burner HERE that will also playback the recorded media.

That's correct. I do it all the time with my canon. I do the burning with the canon software on my PC. I play back on my blu-ray player. It's pretty easy.

If you father-in-law has a computer, I highly recommend he burn DVD's with that and get a blu-ray player for playback (which can be had for as little as $80 these days). That's much cheaper than the canon standalone. Plus you can edit if you use your PC for authoring.

Yes, but the file structure is different from a standard DVD. You have to make sure that the DVD-authoring software supports this format. A standard DVD has a bunch of files in a VIDEO_TS folder. An AVCHD disc has a bunch of files and subfolders in a BDMV folder. I just popped one of mine into my computer and opened it up, to check it. I think this is the same file structure that a Blu-ray disc uses, but I can't check that for sure because my computer's optical drive can't read Blu-ray discs.

I don't have a camcorder myself, but I do this a with HD video that I record from OTA broadcasts on my computer.

Luckily the included canon software takes care of all those details for you. You just pick the clips you want and click "make an AVCHD DVD" for HD playback on a blu-ray player or "make a standard DVD" for SD playback on a DVD player. It builds the folder/file structure for you. It's pretty quick and painless.
