Looking For Advice/Comments On A Specific Build

Thread Starter
I was hoping I could get a little input from the group on an HTPC I'd like to build and have a few miscellaneous questions as well.

I have tooled around on my pre-built Dell, HP, etc. computers but limited to swapping out dead hard drives, power supplies and the like. I have been tinkering around with the idea of building my own PC and think I am finally going to take the plunge. After an extensive amount of research, I think I am going to move forward with the recommended Intel/Intel high end ATX package suggested by renethx (brief summary with a few slight changes below).

CPU: Core i5 750 2.66GHz LGA1156, $196.
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS9500A LED, $41, with Zalman ZM-CS5B Clip Kit for Socket 1156/775, $3 (necessary to attach the cooler to the LGA1156 socket).
Motherboard: ASRock P55 Extreme LGA1156 Intel P55 chipset ATX, $140.
Memory: A-DATA HY63I1B16K DDR3-1333 2 x 2GB Kit, $88.
Graphics Card (ATI): HIS H575FN1GD iCooler IV Radeon HD 5750 GDDR5 1GB, $145.
HDD: WD Caviar Green 1.5TB 32MB/SATA-3G HDD, $109.
PSU: Corsair TX650W CMPSU-650TX 650W, $85.
Case: Zalman HD503 ATX
Optical Drive: SAMSUNG 8X BD-ROM Model SH-B083L

I am interested in playing FLACs through this PC on a 7.1 speaker set up. Will I need a separate sound card or additional software to accomplish this? I will be connecting this HTPC to an Onkyo receiver via a 10' HDMI. Should I run the HDMI cable from the motherboard or the graphics card? If I run it from the graphics card, should I run a SPDIF Toslink for the audio?

I don't currently play a lot of PC games, but I would like the system to be able to handle it if possible.

I would like to use this HTPC to be able to record 1080p shows and stream them to other PCs I have connected via Cat 5 throughout the house. I am very interested in purchasing the Ceton Quad Cable Card card when it becomes available. Do you think the system as I put it together above would support recording from four different tuners and streaming the 1080p over the gigabit Ethernet or would I need more processing/graphics power for that?

From a technical perspective, how many hard drives do you think I could install in this configuration?

Do you see any compatibility issues with any of the items I have listed above? Finally, though I would like to get started putting this together ASAP, I don't have a deadline, so if you know of a product releasing soon that would be a smart upgrade, please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

1. cpu cooler - consider noctua c12p-se14. Quieter and more efficient than the Zalman. It uses a 140mm fan, so it can spin at very low rpm to achieve the same cfm.

2. psu - consider Seasonic x650 Extremely quiet ('semi-passive' design), modular (no cable clutter) and 80-plus GOLD certified (the highest power efficiency rating. most 'good' psus are 80% or more efficient. This one is over 90% efficient). Possibly one of the best quality PSUs out there atm.

3. No. Just HDMI from the 5750. It will do 7.1 through hdmi and supports audio bitstreaming.

4. Its not quite what a gamer would call a 'gaming machine' but it will definitely play any current release with good frame rates. If you're going to be playing at 1080 resolution, you could up the gpu to a 5850 or a 5870. I guess the extent of the need to do this depends on how serious you are about gaming quality and your budget. What you have there will definitely get the job done. Upgrading this component will add nuances in quality in terms of additional frame rates at high texture detail, anti aliasing, anisotropic filtering, etc. So if you like to play with all the graphical goodies turned 'on' then look to upgrade. If you're happy to play with less eye-candy, then this card is fine.

5. Theres nothing more to add horsepower-wise to achieve what you're proposing there. Two separate drives for recording might be a good idea though. (Two tuners per drive).

6. the case will fit 3x 3.5" drives plus 1x 3.5" in the 5.25" bay (assuming you only want one optical drive), so 4 3.5" HDDs in total. If you're planning an extensive media collection, Silverstone make 'server' HTPC cases that will store 7x 3.5" HDDs (lc20 is one example)

7. The socket 1156 setup is pretty recent. So is the 5 series Radeon. I dont see them being superceded in the immediate future. The machine is sound in respect to the currency of the hardware.

Thanks so much for your advice. I am going to upgrade the cooler and psu as you suggested. I will most likely keep the graphics card as is.

I think I will go with the Zalman 501HD as opposed to the 503 to keep ambient light down (the computer will be in a theater beneath the projection screen).

1. Do you know of any space limitations for that case that may prohibit the graphics card or cooler you suggested? I tried to find the length of the graphics card but didn't find that specification anywhere.

2. Can I just use an old usb IR receiver I have to use a media center remote with this configuration?

3. I've noticed during my research a lot of people talking about changing different configurations regarding memory, fan speed, etc. Will the parts I have listed above work well together out of the box, or will I need to tinker with them to get them to work? I'm not opposed to tinkering, but I'd like to do it over the course of time and not have to do it to get immediate results

4. I cannot find the memory listed above at any retailers. Is there another brand/configuration you can recommend that would be similarly compatible? I will be upgrading the listed processor to the i-7 860, in case that makes a difference.

5. If I decide to go with the i-7 860 and the listed motherboard, will there be any issues going with two dual cable card tuners as opposed to the quad tuner?

Thanks again!

I've ordered all the parts and hope to have them soon to begin my first build. The only parts left I need is the memory. I can't seem to find the memory renethx suggested. Are either of these sets from Best Buy comparable or compatible with the system I mentioned? Any siggestions on which one I should go with? Thanks!

Memory Master - 2-Pack 2GB PC3-10666 DDR3 DIMM Memory Kit (1066 Mhz)
Kingston Technology - HyperX 2-Pack 2GB PC2-8500 DDR2 Desktop Memory Kit (1066 Mhz)
Kingston Technology - HyperX 2-Pack 2GB PC3-12600 DDR3 DIMM Memory Kit (1600 Mhz)
Corsair - 2-Pack 2GB PC3-12800 DDR3 DIMM Memory Kit (1600 Mhz)

Can anyone explain the difference between the 1066 Mhz and 1600 Mhz memory I mentioned? I would like to make sure I am purchasing the correct type of memory for my setup. Thanks!
