Harmon Kardon HK 3490 with JBL L890s Not enough bass!

Hey Guys,

I purchased the HK 3490 and JBL L890s because i figured 2 channel amp, with 2 monsters speakers.. all I should need? I guess I was wrong.

With the bass all the way on high the speakers sound amazing but just not enough bass. I have to turn the receiver volume way way up to get them to really rumble the house but at that point the highs are just too loud to bear.

I am not good with this stuff but I figured 2 channel amp = 2 speakers only?

I see there is a subwoofer output on the receiver... Can I add a subwoofer to this receiver along with my 2 front speakers? Or will that take away power going to the 2 monster speakers i got? Should i buy an amplified subwoofer? or what should i do here?

Thanks in advance!

Its doesn't take any power away from your JBL speakers because you use powered subwoofers! That means the sub has its own built in amp.

There is a separate bass volume on the front panel lower right. Did you try that yet?
(Oops..you already did...)

Yes, an amplified SW will help.

So I can just buy a powered/amplified subwoofer and hook it into the receiver since it has sub outputs? Do i have to do/change anything on the receiver so its not sending power to the sub or does it automatically know somehow?

Also do you guys have any advice on a good powered subwoofer to add to my system?

Is the JBL L8400P 12" (300mm), 600-Watt, High-Performance Powered Subwoofer any good?

I can get one for $400 plus shipping.

That sounds like an awesome SW...I am not familiar with that one but it should do the job of blasting your walls...

Thats a decent enough sub - and the price is certainly good. There are other subs you might want to consider before you buy one. Elemental Designs - HSU - SVS - AV123 all make excellent subs in that price range.

The JBL Studio L series are noted for somewhat bright highs. A friend of mine has the L820s and they had to be tamed a bit for him. We added a sub.
