ColorMunki - How Good or How Bad?

Well the ColorMunki Photo/Design is a Spectrophotometer so that in itself is a plus. It is also designed by the same guys that do the i1Pro. All of its accessories are built in like the dark offset, ambient diffuser, just turn the dial to the mode you want. The downside currently is the ColorMunki does not have a tripod mount we are working on a design.

How does it compare to the i1 Pro? Any notable differences in accuracy?

ColorMunki Photo/Design spectral range in the emission mode (display/projector calibration): 400-700 nm.
i1Pro: 380-730.
I've compared the ColorMunki Photo and the i1Pro for several CCFL displays (with standard and wide gamut): max dE00=1.24, avr dE00=0,71

OK.
I have tested my i1Pro, ColorMunki Photo and Spyder3Elite on several computer monitors: NEC LCD2490WUXi2 (standard gamut) and NEC LCD2690WUXi2 (wide gamut).
See the table below represented one test (with the worst results).

P.S. My Spyder3 is very inaccurate for wide gamut displays.

Those numbers look promising. Particularly after you discard 0.

The ColorMunki is designed to be both re-certification and repair free (they only seem to be concerned about lamp drift which the CM should resist). They do not come with a calibration certificate.

I've seen the specs somewhere at X-Rite but at the moment all I can find is this at SpectraCal.

You aren't kidding. The Spyder is a mess, especially for white, yellow, and cyan. Those are huge errors.

Unlike the I1 Pro, the ColorMunki's do not come with a NIST certificate as bodosom as posted. However, SpectraCal will re-certify the ColorMunki's for $175 (less at Calibration Forums).

Meter Recertification does not mean the meter is repaired if needed (most cases, it would be cheaper to buy a new one if repair is needed).

In this case what would that mean?

They check it's accuracy using their CS-2000 on the reference displays in their lab and provide a certificate (and the tables for CalMAN).

This is the same thing X-Rite does with the I1 Pro's (minues the tables). If the meter isn't/can't get into spec, repair is needed at an extra cost.

Yes, my Spyder is very inaccurate. My i1Display 2 is much better, but it isn't superb for wide gamut monitors as well.

P.S. J.Raimar Kuhnen-Burger is a well-known Color Science specialist.

Sounds like a pretty good endorsement given the cost of the ColorMunki vs the i1Pro. A question, however, there is another thread http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...php?p=17190865, which talks about the UV filter in the ColorMunki being a problem for CalMAN. Is that filter a problem? Is it used when the device is in projector mode?

Also, will either version of the ColorMunki work with the CalMAN software, I'm interested in getting the Design version (instead of the photo), since it comes with the Pantone information, which I would find useful in my artwork. The specs look very similar.

Will you be offering a home version of the CalMAN software for the same standalone price (I don't see ColorMunki listed)..

Also, when can we expect V4 of the software to be available, and would people purchasing V3 now get an upgrade or would we have to pay more? The Amazon price of the ColorMunki + the standalone software price has my trigger finger itchy.

Since SpectraCal is selling the CM we can presume there's no problem. I don't know if that's because, as noted, the filter is for the lamp (LEDs in a CM) or if something has happened in the intervening months.


The two packages contain the same device. One's white the other is black. The current build of CalMAN 3 supports the CM.


People are talking about Spring.

CalMAN for the EyeOne Pro - Software Only (now CalMAN Home Spectrophotometer) will work with the I1 Pro and/or ColorMunki Spectrophotometers.

CalMAN 4 is expected to beta in Feb 2010 and then released in March 2010.

The upgrade policy is: Free upgrades for one year from time of purchase. So anyone purchasing CalMAN 3.x today will automatically get a free upgrade to version 4.

To calibrate professional plasma (kuro or panasonic vx100), do you suggest i1pro or CM?

I suggest you read me FAQ "Which meter is right for me?" and decide for yourself as there are pros and cons to each. There's no "right" answer.

I'm not sure either what you mean by "professional" plasma. The ones you mention are consumer brand types.

D-Nice will be testing the ColorMunki (compared to the I1 Pros) on his 9G Kuros and the results will be posted.

I temporarily disabled my user account in Vista X64 and attempted an installation and got an error message.


It will be a two hour drive to get the required internet connection.

I tried everything including to disable the NET Framework in services.

Looks good right about now.

I still get the same error with the full install.

After some fighting with Windows update (for which NET framework would also not install) I was able to get it recognized by CalMAN 2.62 for a short period after a rollback of the NET Framework install, but it stated that the meter was not registered. I did a system restore then reinstalled instead everything and CalMan will not recognize the meter. I tried each of the meter positions thinking that might help and used the refresh but there was still no change. I decided to try the included software was does seem to work. In about 5 minutes I had created a profile for my laptop and color seems to look closer to my LED backlit monitor which will also get calibrated. I'll try also setting a profile for the projector (laptop is the HTPC) and see what that is like and give my impressions. I would like to see it working in CalMAN so I could have some verifiable results but it looks like that may have to wait.
