copy pc content to dvr for playback

I just recently got a Dish Network vip 722 receiver with external hdd via usb. My question is: Is it possible to copy content from my PC (SD and HD videos) to the external hd and play them back via the Dish Network receiver? If so, what format do they need to be in (MPEG2, MPEG4, h.264)?
