Looking back on your orignial post. It looks slightly different than yours, but you refered to this as the "Optical Block" on your post #5

There are only two brackets that hold the LE tray in place the L-Bracket on the left with two screws on each surface and then the other L-Bracket just to the right of the Lamp with four little screws. The LE tray can only be removed if you completly remove the bracket on the right.

This seems to be the problem.

Right now it seems like if you leave the TV off for an extened period of time it will turn back on for a short while.

Shows a thermal related problem.

I thought about bench testing as well, but could not think of a way to do it. If I can get power to it and it spins then one assumes it is a controler issue?

Can you find the connector to that fan? If so, disconnect it and see if you can apply separate power to it. If the fan does work/turn, is it a three wire connector or two? if three, then it might be a return signal issue, or as you said, a control circuit problem.

Any idea where I could get the alignment pattern?

The two popular DVD's are from Avid & DVE;

I am not sure exactly what you would call this but it is the relfector mirror on the last projector housing before it is projected onto the Ferenzial Lens.

You had that in your hand, it's just a mirror.

I am going to order a repair manual and I will go from there. I will post an update

Got the repair manual. Went over all my work step by step. What I found out is that I did not remove the light engine tray correctly. The metal panel that is still in the tv housing after I removed the LE was supposed to come out. You can see the metal panel I am talking about in my photos.
Now here is where it is interesting, by correctly installing the tray with the bottom panel attached there is no more gap at the top of the screen and the tv does not power down.

Everything is excellent!! Awesome picture and it is like I have a new tv. Took a while to adjust since I messed up all the adjustments

And according to the service menu I have 8964 hours on my tv. I should note I also use it as a computer monitor.

Videobruce thank you for all you help. Like Videobruce stated make sure you have the repair manual before you perform this procedure. I got the manual online for $5.00

Cheers
Nick

Best $5 you spent.
Could you post what the manual shows regarding that plate?

You got it,
I am at work right now, but I will post pictures from the RM on how to properly remove the LE Tray.

I'm brand new to the group and am hoping to put this great information to good use to restore my recent acquisition (WD-73831). Can you share where you purchased the manual for $5? Thanks!

By the way - I also found a youtube video that describes this repair process quite well. (I'm too new to post a link, so search YouTube for "DLP Color Distortion Repair" and it'll come up in two parts.

The only thing lacking in the videos is a description of the process of reinstalling the LE and any minor alignment tweaks that might be needed. Sorry if this has been posted already elsewhere.
