Well, I had a night to play with the new 3100 HD box and I have some questions for you experts. I am sure that some/all of this has been answered somewhere in the thread but I am not sure I always understand what I am reading.
First, I notice a lot of the stuff on HD HBO and HD SHO is not full screen, I assume that it is really just normal TV broadcast placed on my widescreen. It certainly does not look much better than looking at the svideo output on the TV. Occasionally, something appears (some movies is all I have seen so far) full screen. The picture quality seems to be better than what I get with zoomed svideo but it is not the blow you away quality that I expected. Certainly not as big a jump as same analog TV to DVD. Are these widescreen movies really HDTV or some better mutation of the digital multimedia that I am used to?
Next, am I correct in assuming that HD HBO and HD SHO just show the same shows that are on the main HBO and SHO channels just in a different format?
I noticed that there is a coaix digital sound output from the 3100. Unfortunately, my reciever is looking for an optical input from the cable box. Is there such a thing as a coaix/optical converter? Is it affordable? I could rewire the whole receiver, move the DVD to the cable inputs, the cable to DVD, reprogram the remote, etc. to maybe get around the problem but would like to see if there is an easy way first.
I went to the SA web site last night to read a little about the 3100 and saw their writeup on the 8000. That sounds like the box of my dreams, digital plus PVR functionality in the cable box (sat. box) where it belongs. Sure hope they finally get it done and TW offers it. I would be willing to pay more for month for something like that.
Sorry for all the dumb questions.
