OTA HDTV for HD ready TV

New guy here, looks like a great site.

I have a 65" Hitachi HD ready RPTV.
Where can I get a tuner for it to receive OTA HD channels.

I thought BB might have one. One guy there told me it can't be done.
Then I asked another guy there if a dvd recorder with a builit in tuner would work, he said it should work. I wasn't going to buy something that "should" work.

I want a new recorder anyway, would a dvr with a built in tuner work.
Thanks

See the STB sticky. The BB guy has no idea what he's talking about: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=179095 And welcome to AVS. Glad to have you.

It will receive your OTA HD stations, but it won't have HD outputs. All DVD recorders with digital tuners (in the USA) downconvert HD to SD, both for recording to DVD and for immediate display on your TV.

Thanks. I didn't know if that would work or not.

What model is it? My friend has a 65" inch Hitachi RPTV that he bought in 2006 that has a digital tuner built in. In fact TVs over 36 inches made after July 1st 2005 had to have digtal tuners built in

As indicated above, DVD recorders only do SD.

Take a look at the HDTV recorder comparison table, which compares the available products with OTA tuners that record actual HD. The alternative is a HTPC.

Also, check out the HDTV Recorders section of the forum. The TivoHD might be a good solution for you.

There is also another option to do what you want to do - acts similar to a VCR as far as recording.
They are FTA Hd receivers, I personally use the Sonicview hd8000, records to an usb hard drive in full HD. Has hdmi and component outs for Hd and the cost is around $250 + usb hard drive which is around $80 or so for 500 gigs.

Look on Craigslist or ebay for a Samsung SIR-T451, DTB-H260F HDTV Tuner, old Sony SAT-HT200, other old Direct TV sat boxes with OTA HDTV tuner. I remember reading about a DTVPAL DVR that might work, I don't know if it really was sold.

OR..... he can tell me the model number because my friend has the same TV and it already has a digital tuner. If he tells me the model number I can confirm or not if it has a digital tuner and save him time and money.

Sorry.
I don't remember the model number. And I forgot to look last night, I'll look tonight.
The manual does say it's hd ready and has a diagram with it hooked to an hd tuner.
We got it about 7-8 years ago.

If it's 7 or 8 years old then it probably doesn't. My friend's was made in 2005.

HD ready just means it can display a HD picture doesn't mean it has a HD tuner in it. So looks like you'll be out money for a HD tuner if you can find one.

My mom uses the DTVPAL DVR and she loves it. It saves her from paying $90 a month to the local cable company.

Same thing here. My set has a built in tuner, but the DTV Pal DVR is my 'main' tuner. Records in HD, and allows you to pause and rewind live TV. Monthly service price is right - Zero! Going on two years cable-free myself.

You can connect this unit either with HDMI or component video for HD output.

That is a lot better than paying $90 a month to the cable company. $90 a month will buy more DVDs than you can shake a stick at. You get to watch what you want to uncut and commercial free and you get to keep them after you watch them. No more paying to watch repeats. 14 months of being cable free myself. 90 x 14 = $1,260 saved.
