Noobie HDMI Hook up

Hi all, and do please forgive my ignorance. I finally got into the 21 Century and purchased a Sony Z5100 with a Denon DHT590BA, both from Best Buy. The guy there told me in order to hook up my audio to the tv, I would need an optical cable. Right now though, I have the HDMI from the cable box to the Receiver via HDMI, then from there to the tv via HDMI. Is that correct? It looks and sounds great.

My question, was he talking about hooking audio from the tv optical out to the cable box to the receiver ? Back from the tv to receiver? I have noticed that I have to turn the receiver on to watch/listen to tv on that input. Anyway, I could hook it up so I could just watch tv and not worry about the receiver being on until I want to watch a movie or something. I really don't need the receiver for regular viewing.

I hope someone on the board gets this since I am pretty much lost just typing it. And really, don't get me started about the tivo and Wii... although I think I do have the dvd down pat. Even a blind squirrel gets a nut every now and then.

Thanks in advance and hopefully I am not made too much fun of. Thanks !!

The way you have it hooked up now is fine, however as you note you will need to have the receiver on.

The BBY guy may have been suggesting that you hookup HDMI directly to the TV from the cablebox, and also run an optical cable to the receiver from the cable box. That way you could leave the receiver off, and just use the TV speakers for daily viewing. If you wanted, you could turn on the receiver and then use surround for movies or whatnot.

It's kind of your choice. The latter may be a little bit more confusing since it creates two ways to listen to the TV and you'd want to turn down the TV speakers all the way when using the receiver instead of the TV speakers. Frankly, I would always use the audio system and leave it hooked up as you have it now. But that's just me.

If you need an optical cable, you can buy one for a few dollars at monoprice.
