VDPAU not working? xbmc sucks?

My htpc consists on: pentium dual core e5300 2.60 ghz, 2 gb ddr2 800 mhz ram, zotac geforce 9300 d-e which comes with an integrated 9300 geforce of course, im running ubuntu 9.10 and im pissed as hell that my hd videos play like sh*t ! specially x264 videos! poor framerate, freezing, skipping, the audio skips , fastens =/ ...

I installed the 190.53 drivers of the video card from the nvidia site, downloaded vlc player, smplayer, and xbmc , which has the WORST results of all them !!! and makes it worse because i love the interface on xbmc and its the player i want to use mainly!

I turned on the vdpau on smplayer and xbmc but it seems it doesnt work cuz i keep getting the same pathetic results , am i doing something wrong?

Any advise ? Dont tell me is the e5300 which runs short of power, cuz i chose it over the atom because it was supossed to be way more powerful

It doesn't sound like it's using VDPAU for some reason. After you installed the driver from the nvidia site, did you enable the driver in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file?

And no, XBMC does not suck.

Sounds like an incorrectly installed driver.

Try Mandriva 2010.0 (see the pinned thread), the Nvidia driver is included with it so you will be up and running in no time, no need to install the driver manually afterwards.

you can't just turn on smplayer, you need to use a version of mplayer that is compiled with vdpau support.

To add to what everyone above me said, I would recommend installing the nVidia driver from the NVidia repository instead of using the installer from NVidia.com. I'm on my blackberry so I can't link to the repository. Perhaps someone can place a link in this thread?

What version of XBMC are you running? I'm running 9.11 and absolutely LOVE it. There's nothing it won't play. Movies, music, networked music, internet radio, networked movies, etc. It is a very mature and well written media suite IMO.

I purged the system from nvidia settings, i used:

sudo aptitude remove --purge NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run

Then i installed the drivers via the repository but im still getting the same results, crapy playback of hd videos =(

No i did not, i'm trying right now but what do i need to change? Here's a cap of the htpc with my monitor plugged in ( i dont have internet near the tv) , its just for reference, my tv's resolution is 1920x1080 and my monitor 1680x1050 , i dont get the values on "monitor section" HorizSync 28.0 - 33.0 VertRefresh 43.0 - 72.0 ? shouldnt it be just 60?

Using aptitude is not the correct way to install or uninstall the driver that you downloaded from the nvidia website. To install it, you need to make it executable, then run it, as so:

chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run
sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run

At the end of the installation process, it will ask you if you want it to create an xorg.conf file for you. Answer yes.

At this point, it should be properly installed, and MythTV should work properly. If it doesn't, please post the following:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

And then run mythfrontend -v playback --logfile ~/mythfrontend.log
and post the resulting logfile.

I just installed the SVN version of XBMC, so that I could use my newly installed CrystalHD card (which it supports). I was quickly disappointed to find that deinterlacing is broken in the Linux version of XBMC! Without deinterlacing, you will find it very difficult to play DVD movies or recorded HDTV.

This truely SUCKS!

I don't know what the other posters find so good about XBMC, but I can't even watch my MythTV recordings with it, so it is useless to me. The deinterlacing problem was first reported back in Sept 2008, so it must not be very important to them. Looking pretty is important to them, and they spend a lot of development on that.

MythTV, and it's GUI gets a lot of knocks for not being very pretty. But it can deinterlace most mpeg files, and that is what is important!

What could they be thinking...

So when you say 'MythTV recordings' do you mean H.264-AVC program stream, or transport stream, or mpeg2 of some sort, or what? IOW what is your source?

Just the USA HDTV OTA broadcasts, which are a form of mpeg recording.

It's been a while for me (and I've been drinking), but I believe OTA is mpeg2. (ATSC transport stream) If XBMC can't handle that, I'll be a monkey's uncle. (and they are fscking lame)

Ha Ha! I've been drinking too!

My job requires me to be On-Call for a week, every eight weeks. Being On-Call means no alcohol. As soon as I got home I was no longer On-Call, it was shot-and-beer time for me!

I earlier sent an email to the CrystalHD/XBMC Linux developers, and I just got a response that deinteracing support is coming, VERY SOON! I am too drunk to provide any more meaningful info on this.

This is hardware deinterlacing, using the CrystalHD card, and not the general deinterlacing, that XBMC lacks.

All this referencing to past practices has lead me to play my The Best Of Mountain CD.

My understanding is there's no way to truly uninstall it, because the nvidia installer overwrites system libraries, and doesn't put them back on uninstall. But if you want to anyway, the command is:

sudo ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run --uninstall

"
But after i enter chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53-pkg1.run it says it cannot be accessed , the directory does not exists =/

I have been trying various options for playback of my DVD library. XBMC looks like a good option, but it crashes for me when I try to play any videos.

I have had better luck with Boxee. It works reliably. The main problem I have with Boxee is the lack of deinterlacing.

System: Acer Aspire Revo (Atom+Ion single core)
OS: MythBuntu 9.10
Working Apps (with VDPAU): MythTV Frontend works great (except for DVD playback), Boxee works well (except for deinterlacing)
