Are sure about #3? I think this only applies if the order is fulfilled by Amazon.com. Whenever I buy from an Amazon.com merchant it always tell you to see the merchant for its return and warranty policy not Amazon.com.

The FAQ is pretty minimalistic, but that may always be the case since so many of the features of the player are the same as the BDP-83.

Thanks Bill for the nice detailed message. I read it through and think I may buy one. I have about a thousand DVDs and with my 52" LCD it sounds like I'll be pleased with this new player.

Can all these reviews/FAQs go on the front page please? Moderators? Easier to find them there for reference.

It would help, Amazon has free shipping and being in MD when I order from Amazon it shows up the next day for free. Oppo is on the left coast and takes 5-7 days.

I have been looking at the BDP83 and waiting for the comparison of the new BDP80. I'll let some of the pros test this and choose one of them someday.

To play the CD stereo on the BDP80 what would be the best way to hook up to my receiver? On both 80&83 I would use the HDMI for BP/DVD, I would like to set the CD on its own source. On the BDP83 I would use L&R audio jacks.

I do wish this unit had support for Internet-based video streaming, such as from NetFlix. I have an Oppo DV981HD that I dearly love and a Sony BDP S350 that I... like. I'd love to replace them both with the BDP-80 but the wife (who is more interested in bulk video that quality audio and video) would prefer our next box to have the ability to stream from NetFlix, whether that's a new Blu-Ray player or a Roku box or similar. This unit would be a done deal if it had that.

Also, it's 10:55 EST on 1/25/2010 and Oppo still doesn't have a link to information on this player on their home page. I would think somebody would have updated it at a minute past midnight. This is an exciting new player!

Lastly, does anybody have an accurate listing of the video and audio formats that this unit can play from its USB ports? Can it do DIVX-encoded AVI files? AVCHD files? 24-bit WAV or FLAC files (like the 24-bit/44.1 Khz FLAC files on the limited edition Beatles collection USB drive)? The only hands-on review I've seen so far mentioned only doing JPEG stills on it but the info I've read indicates it can do video and audio as well.

I think the OPPO staff is still hungover from last night playoff games? Maybe they'll be in sometime today to take orders!

This looks a great overall player. I just wish Oppo would add Netflix, Pandora, etc. streaming. I don't know what kind of licensing fees are associated with that. Maybe that is the reason Oppo doesn't have it yet.

Has there been any talk about them possibly adding it to the 80/83?

The BDP-80's manual says: "When the Output Resolution is set to 'Source Direct' (see page 19 for details), the component video connection will not output video when playing a Blu-ray Disc with 1080p 24Hz content." This suggests that if the HDMI output is set to 1080p60Hz on a normal film-based BD, then you'll still get component output.

Contrast the BDP-83's manual, which says, "When the 'Primary Output' Setup Menu item in the 'Video Setup' section is set to 'HDMI' (see page 49 for details), the component video connection will not output video when playing a Blu-ray Disc with 1080p 24Hz content . . . " This suggests that when HDMI output is set to HDMI, at ANY resolution (1080p60Hz or otherwise), when playing a normal film-based BD, there will be no component output at all.

Do I have this correct?

Someone here confirmed that if you set it to source direct then there will be no output over component with a 1080p/24 BR. If you set it to Auto or any other resolultion besides source direct then it will ouput over both HDMI and component at the same time.

So you verified the 80's component out works exactly the same as the 83's?

Someone here made it sound like if the 80 was set to auto and a 1080p/24 BR disc was playing then it would output 1080p/24 over HDMI and 1080i over component.

for those that are asking about the subtitle button on the remote? the new toshiba blu ray player has one. FYI

I'm still curious about this player's performance on screens 100" - 120" as compared to say the PS3 or early Panasonic models. I realize the 80 cannot match the 83 but I've only seen these models on a large screen, and with a small to mid collection of DVD's, I'm straddling the fence.

Disclaimer: Still rumor

Maybe "Auto" and "Source Direct" are two different settings? Reading the (rumored) manual, and without VRS, it will probably produce the same effect for the the rumor player, my guess.

I don't have a 24hz display to test it, but I suspect that is not the case.

I use the stereo analog audio and composite video outputs on my TiVo, cable box, and HD-DVD player to feed a satellite NTSC AV system in my kitchen. I'd like to have a BD player that supports the same functionality.

On the BDP-80, when simultaneously using HDMI as the primary output for both audio and video...

1. Is the S-video output active?

1a. If so, is the video output letterboxed or horizontally squeezed?

2. Is the audio output through the FL and FR analog outputs automatically downmixed from the multichannel?

3. Is there any effect at all on the HDMI AV quality when using these analog outputs?

There is a 2-channel downmix setting in the Setup. I use this for headphones; just a Y-cable, nothing fancy.


I'm sure there is no difference when Primary Output is set to HDMI. I would want to test s-video first to answer the other questions, and to see if there is a difference when Primary Output is set to Component.

wow, it looks like for an extra 10 bux, you can get the backlit remote instead.

$9.50 more for a backlight remote. I like that Oppo offers it but didn't include it to keep the price down.

Does anyone have any pictures of both remotes?
