I've got a new BDP80, and the BluRay disc of Clash of the Titans is giving the player a hard time. If I try to bypass all the previews and stuff, the player locks up. If I just let it go to the menu in its own time, by watching all the previews and everything, it gets to the disc's menu and I can then press enter for play and the movie starts.
All my other BluRay discs are playing fine.

Anyone else have any problems with the BluRay version of the new Clash of the Titans???

Ahh, ain't that nice. I new method for enforcing commercials on you. Its not enough you paid for the disk, but you must now pay to watch it!

naw...thats not whats going on...It didnt do that when I first played it. It was the subsequent viewings where it started. Before I watched any DVDs I put the latest firmware from June 2010 in it too.
Was just kinda curious what happens when a guy finds something like this. Do you report it to the folks at Oppo?
I've got an Oppo 980H also, but the BluRay road is new for me.

Anyone having troubles playing the movie Kick Ass on their BDP-80? I had to use my PS3 to play the movie.

Try this procedure exactly: What do I do if a Blu-ray disc will not load or play, or if it freezes the player?

If still no good, give us more details on the symptoms.

Excellent resource thanks. I power cycled the unit and didn't have an issue today. Last night it got stuck with the player displaying Top Menu but the screen would be blank.

I have a PS3 which is connected to my old Denon AVR-3803 receiver. That means I don't decode the newer audio formats.

For now I don't have money to buy a new receiver, so I was wondering if I buy an Oppo BDP-80 and connect it with the analog outputs to my old receiver, will I get a nice improvement being able to listen to the lossless tracks?

How is the analog section of the BDP-80... and what about the bass management, is it good?

There's no bass management possible in your AVR, so the player will have to do it. Read the online manual and FAQs for details on setup.

FWIW, you can still use the SPDIF output and get outstanding quality - much better than DVD audio - from most BD discs. Personally, that's what I'd do till a new AVR is possible. The benefits of being able to use the AVR's processing far outweigh any small gains from using the multichannel analog connects.

This is what I'm doing for now, using the optical connection out from the PS3.
It's getting the 'core' of the sound tracks.

For the DTS sound tracks, it's really good since it decode it as a 1.5mpbs. But for the True HD, it's only 640kbps.

For True HD core, I'm rarely impressed by the sound quality.

DD at 640 is still twice the bitrate of the average DVD.

So does everyone here still think that the Oppo BDP-80 is the best Blu-ray player on the market for the money? Anything better?

i can honestly say it's the best blu ray player i've ever owned





uh, yeah..... it's my first blu ray player. but seriously; i can't give it anything but rave reviews. besides blu ray movies, i listen to a lot of dvd-a's and sacd's so it's a perfect solution for me. also, my screen size is 110" and i think it does a terrific job on dvd's. much better than expected considering they recommend the 83 for large screens.

If you are referring to a universal player, then the BDP-80 is defintely in the running.

I love my BDP-80, but I can't swear that I wouldn't have bought something else if I didn't need a universal disc player. Or that I would have bought anything else since I already had a PS3 (for Blu-ray, DLNA, and other media-center functions) a TiVo HD (for DVR and streaming).

For me, it was Oppo's introduction of a universal player at this price point that made the sale. It's still the cheapest one available; that's it's such an excellent BD player is a bonus.

would anyone be able to tell me how the dialogue is when watching blu rays with HD audio ?

is the dialogue clear at low volumes - or do you have to raise the volume high to hear them speak and then lower it because its too loud -

i am considering this model - if it sounds clear with dialogue - if it decodes the HD audio - and sends it to my AVR - does it sound clearer that way ?

also - how good or how bad is the DVD upscaling ? i am using a older magnavox which does a decent job - its a panny chip in it - about 3 years old - when they first come out - it doesnt decode -just sends it out to my AVR -

compared to my current magnavox - would i see a improvement in picture with both dvds and blu rays ?

I've read this in many reviews also. Will the BD80 work ok on my LG 50PK750?

Standard DVD is 448 kbps.

The BDP-80 is as good at upscaling as all but a very few other players. Oppo's recommendation is only in the context of their own BDP-83, which is the best. If you think you need the best (or if it will always bother you that you could have had the best), buy the 83. If knowing that you're seeing upscaling that is better than what most other players deliver, the 80 will be sufficient. Particularly on a 50" screen; by "larger" Oppo is really talking about very large projection systems in the 120" range.

thanks for that - i am also considering the bd 80 - i really dont need the 83 - so if i can save a few - i am good with the bd 80 - i have a 50 inch and was a little bit worried what i would be giving up if i didnt get the 83 -

being that i am using a 3 year old maganavox - and it works very good - i would think the bd 80 would upscale at least as good - if not better

you'll be fine with the -80 though. Just for your info, I have a 42" plasma TV and a 106" screen and the 80's performance is top notch, believe me.
Oh, BTW, I do have a 983 dvd as well, with the ABT chipset and to be honest, the difference in performance between the 2 models is minimal

thanks - i sit about 6 feet away - with my current player - just plain magnavox when it came out - works blu rays very good also and reg dvds not too bad really

it would be safe to think that the bd 80 will do as good or better then the magnavox ?

do you know if you let the bd 80 decode and send to the AVR - what does it send it as ? PCM etc. ?

if I understand your ? correctly the Oppo would(I think) send a PCM stream if you're sending it via HDMI. if you used the Oppo's analog outs it would obviously be a decoded analog signal.

let me say now that I could be wrong about the HDMI part.

I bet my neck that the -80 will outperform your Magnavox in every single detail, whether on BD or DVD's.

The -80 allows you to either decode the new HD audio codecs internally (converted to PCM streams), or to send the bitsreams to be decoded by your AVR though.

If you want to cross-check who's doing the best deconding job, you gotta try both ways; I mean, to send bitstream and to decode internally.

For the records, my AVR is a Denon 2809CI and I always prefer the Oppo to do the decoding; it's always better to my ears (and the blue HD light in the AVR never turns on, but I still have 100% lossless HD audio though)

thanks - i needed to know that too - i have a marantz 7002 but i plan on letting the player do the decode - to see if i can use my EQ settings that way - hoping to get a better clearer dialogue with low volume , late night movie watching -

thats one of my main goals - and hope the rest is just better then my current - which i am sure your right about it that - i cant imagine it being worse

oooooo, great choice of AVR's ... I have an SR8001 (so I have to use the -80 to do the decoding anyway), and the combination is blissful.
