Setup is very simple, install latest Orb Caster software on your Mac/PC first. Get it from http://www.orb.com/en/download.html

Then boot Orb BD in Oppo Blu-ray with 1 GB or more thumb drive selected over internal persistent memory, with BD-Live enabled with active Ethernet connection so Orb BD can update it as required.

Then launch Orb Min-controller, sign in, choose Orb BD as device. Now navigate to what you want to connect to. In both audio and video services there are hosts you need to log into (email, password) for that service's activation. (example Pandora, Netflix, Hulu/Hulu Plus)

If you want to see how good streaming is, check out ESPN3 games for starters.

How reliant/dependant is the Orb system on my PC's capabilities? The desktop PC in our house is a pretty old (2004 ish) Dell XP unit with an ancient graphics card - Everything else is quick (internet connection, etc) but the PC is a dog.

See the Orb site for the minimum processor speed and other requirements in the PC.

Rats. I just purchased a Roku HD box so I could watch Netflix etc in my main room but I have a BDP80 there already. I guess the Roku is going to be more stable and won't rely on having the server.

My main Netflix, Hulu+ viewing is done on a PS3. It's amazing that the PS3 (mine is first gen FAT) is constantly updated to provide the latest features.

A PC by any other name is a PC. The Xbox 360 and the PS3 have much more processing, memory, and built in architecture to support many more feature upgrades then a stand alone player does, so it is not too surprising that they these consoles continue to receive upgrades.

That is additional video processing which can't be used to store, access, or otherwise enable additional streaming applications.

Release date: November 10, 2011.
Category: Public Beta Test Version
Main Version: BDP80-24-1104
Loader Version: BT0500
Sub Version: MCU80-06-0118

1. Resolved the disc loading issue reported on several recently released DVD movies. These DVD discs come with their Blu-ray package and sample titles include "True Grit", "Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon" and "Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides". The reason for this issue is related to the new anti-copy strategy implemented on these DVDs which keeps BDP-80 searching for non-existing contents. This problem has been solved.

2. Other general disc compatibility improvement based on recent and upcoming releases. Sample titles included "Rory Gallagher: Live in Montreaux (DVD)", "Avatar" (Blu-ray included in the Panasonic 3D Kit Bundle), "OTAKU (DVD)", "Alban Berg Quartet: Beethoven String Quartets, Vol. 1 (DVD-A)" and "Live! (DVD, 2007)".

Just to inform that the new FW has been successfully installed here
Oh, BTW, for those with the Super Disc hack, it's necessary to reinstall it after every new FW though

Thanks for the info,much appreciated!

Odd. Usually the Super Disk hack doesn't need to be re-installed across firmware releases, it only needs to be installed again when you do a Reset Factory Defaults.
Well, maybe there's gotta be something related to the reset factory defaults, as in my player it simply doesn't play R2 DVD's without reinstalling the Super Disc hack, though... go figure!!
Hi. Can someone link to or describe what the 'super disk hack' does for the bdp80. Thanks.

Anyone with region free hardware modifications to the BDP-80 installed the latest beta upgrade? No problems with the modification?

No problems here.

Oppo BDP80 with MKV files. I use Vortexbox with Serviio for my DLNA software. I recently noticed that playback will be jerky at times and the DTS logo on the receiver will go in/out(lose sound and video is jerky)

So I decided to test the WDTV Live plus on the same network and it seems to be playing the same file fine.

So the question becomes is it the software(Serviio) or something with the oppo. Doesn't seem to be software as I tried Servio on my 6 core pc as well as Tversity and it does the jerky playback as well.

This is a BluRay file that I ripped with Makemkv for some testing purposes.

^ I don't do DLNA myself so I can't offer any direct advice. But you may find what you need in this Oppo DLNA/UPnP specific thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1215071

I seem to recall there are known issues streaming DTS and DTS-HD MA over DLNA.

The info in that thread on the 83 also applies to the 80.

Id appreciate it if you didn't compare my Oppo with a $60 wdlive.

It's only the worlds greatest disc player that FYI you cant replace for twice the money.

I don't rely on my bdp80 to stream anything more than mp3 files and you shouldn't either.

Hi - i have a question now about the BD80 - i own one also and its been excellent for my video needs - and audio -

i just recently started to use the USB drive for music - but i noticed it dosnt play the folders - i have to manually go in each folder to play it - but it wont keep playing to next folder etc. -

i was looking to put music in folders on a Thumbdrive and just let the oppo play all of them etc. --

is there a way i can do this ? also - i was looking not to have my TV on to do this - i dont mind turning it on to start the process - but dont want to leave my TV on - its a Plasma TV - thats the reason -

any ideas how i can make it play folders one after another ? thanks -

its a great player - too bad Oppo wont make a low cost 3D player - and they will be making a 4K player also - i emailed them about that -

just not sure if it will work without a 4K TV - maybe if it converts it down to 1080P

thanks again for any ideas -

^ You can use Pure Mode (Pure button, upper left on the remote) to blank out the video screen while playing such music.

Press Pure again to get the display back. The Wake Up button (lower right on the remote) can be used to get the front panel display back for a few seconds if you need to check the time counter.

I got it.

From HOME browser, MUSIC, tab to the left to access the mini menu ALL MUSIC, playlist, browser. Select ALL MUSIC. It will list and play all the files in subfolders.

I see you prefer your music 'low-res'?

Time to get a proper digital network receiver. I use a popcornhour or wdlive to play hi-res flac or wav files. Your missing alot of the fidelity with mp3s.

Enjoy.

Hi - thanks - i will give that a try next time - just curious if it would work -
i normally still use my CD changer to play music - this was an option i never tried - so figure i give it a shot - can just let it play for hours and hours this way with out worry about changing CD's etc. - i know its not the highest Quality - but actually its not as bad as it sounds on paper - i usually rip to highest setting - my marantz CD player dosnt play all the higher rez. formats on CD - the CD changer is about 15 years old - Sony mega 300 - but works just fine and i have it full of CD's - so i just left it as is - last is my Oppo for movies - plus SACD playback etc. - i am not even sure if i rip music high rez to the thumbdrive if Oppo will play them back that way - i can try that also

but my goal for now was to be able to play the thumbdrive with folders inside - and just hit start to make it play each folder - i want to keep my TV off -

thanks for that info - i will try it - i think i did try something like that and it didnt work - but maybe i missed something along the way - i will follow your steps this time -

thanks -

You're able to begin playback with the ENTER or PLAY buttons. PLAY will continue sequentially and ENTER may only play one song. Additionally, pay attention to the REPEAT, RANDOM setting.

You will need screen to initiate, after then it SHOULD be off.

Ever sit someone down to demo some awesome music and you realize they can't take their eyes off the damn screen, like somethings supposed to happen there too? I'm with you on tv-less music playback.

Hmmm. What about a small, table-top/end-table LCD on a wireless HDMI/RGB switch w/remote. I have a wireless HDMI switch already(harmony compatible). Old lcds they give away. Hmmm. Ive been thinkin bout an lcd picture frame to display and cycle through album covers anyway. Thanks.

i am thinking about trying to add a hard drive to the BD 80 -- and see if that works - i know you need to have an external power supply - and it has to be formatted to Fat 32 -- from reading the manual - it sounds as if this can be done -

has anyone tried to use a hard drive for music ? not a Thumb drive - but a 500 gig external hard drive usb with external power -

if so - can you tell me which drive you used etc.. if it worked -

i been searching for a 2.5 drive - but most i find have only usb powered - normally i would like that but in this case - i need the external power supply -
i cant seem to find one this way - unless i move up to the larger hard drives -
i wanted to keep a small one attached to the front of the BD 80 - then i can rip alot of music there -- high resolution etc.

any ideas ?

thanks -
