HTPC User Having Bad Luck With Finding The Perfect Remote.Any Recomendations Please?

Hello All. I really Hope some of you can shed some light for me here. (I have been researching and buying remotes, tablets for OVER 3 weeks) I have a fairly decent home theater that is controlled by my omega 650 remote [I tried pasting a link but the forum wont allow me cause ive not posted 3 posts yet If you type Omega 650 Universal remote into google you can see the remote i have] its old now, and i'm looking for a replacement for my HTPC SETUP(all AV equipment INCLUDING HTPC, my lights (x10-products with light switches and dimming remotes- that i learned to my omega 650)

Ok Here's the scoop. I bought this case... [I tried pasting a link but the forum wont allow me cause ive not posted 3 posts yet Model Is Thermaltake DH 202 VJ80011N2Z Digital Home Series HTPC Case with Built-in Media LAB LCD and Remote Controller] Which came with the IMON software and imedian. I uninstalled the Imeadian. because i'm using jriver mediacenter for my theater interface. the remote that comes with it just will not suffice. no backlighting, no ability to learn 6-10 other AV components AND ABOVE ALL I'm not sure what kind of ir they are using in it but i cannot teach its buttons to my omega... none of them will learn, it says they learned (passed) but none of them work? (an issue with there remote? or maybe an issue with there ir thats built into the case? suggestions? ideas?)

so i bought an asus t91mt tablet pc to use as a remote control, i tried realvnc and tight. TO SLOW! also tried it with 1000giga connection TO SLOW! so i returned that. then i bought the logitech dinovo mini. keyboard is to SMALL!

So now here i sit with a logitech dinovo mini im selling on ebay, a imon remote that came with htpc case. and my Trusty omega 650 remote(that conrtols everything and will even pop your popcorn (joke)) but yes pretty much does it all EXCEPT CONTROL the HTPC! So basically i have 3 devices now for home theater. and i want to bring this down to 2 if possible. A HTPC universal Remote for all components and To Control HTPC,and the wireless keyboard i bought for heavy surfing\ ext input

Here is where the list of questions\\wants\\desires comes in to play.

1. I want a all in one remote control. Universal Remote that has backlighting, ability to control upto 12 devices including lights, drapes etc, ability to learn whatever button\
emote i throw at it, ability todo extensive macros, more hard buttons the better! ability for hardbuttons to be taught anything i want to teach them (like i can with the Omega)

2. RF ability

3. ability to use imon software or a similiar software, ive read here people describing uirt, girder, eventghost, imon.... which do you guys suggest? why? best choice for my setup? if you suggest something other then imon. just leave the imon installed for the frontview lcd display purpose?

4. i would like my universal remote to be able to control all aspects of the htpc.. is it possible to control mouse movement or mouse clicks with one of the programs listed above? which one works best? i'd like it to be able to do \\or teach it to do keyboard commands, open programs, turn on sleep timers on jriver etc... meaning i can press a button on the universal remote and it will open firefox for me. i can press another button and it will bring up my music library, my pictures library, my videos library, my weather, my feeds, my utube (you get the drift) the ability to teach universal remote keyboard shortcuts for each application. example when im watching my videos i would like to be able to press a button on remote and it will change the aspect ratio, turn subtitles on or off ( BE REALLLY cool if on universal remote i could edit the keys text like i can on omega 650 (meaning on omega when i choose dvd it brings me to 4 pages of commands ive taught it with custom labels i made for each key on each page. so on my remote when i press dvd it brings up 4 pages with these keys named subtitles, eject, aspect ratio, bookmark etc...) is this possible with a universal remote and htpc apps?

5. the ability on the universal remote to teach it letters?! meaning while im in my jriver theaterview and i chose say movies genres, then show all movies of that genre i could press a button on the universal remote for the letter T and it will bring me to where all the movies that start with the letter T are. I accomplish this now with the imon by pressing a number button for the right letter so if i wanted to goto T's i would press the number button 8 (which is TUV), so it should be possible with the remote\\girder uirt, eventghost you guys suggest?

6. the abilty to wake the sleeping computer from universal remote, like th eimon does.

7. a joystick or similiar type pad on the remote. so that i can move left, right, up, down. or MAYBE EVEN somehow teach it to be a mouse? Not all the time but would be handy while in theaterviews.

8. I have bought myself a smaller wireless keyboard with trackball\\scroller on it for heavy surfing on Big screen. but this will hopefully only be used for heavy surfing\\heavy writing. If possible i'd like to accomplish light writing tasks with the remote.

Well i'll leave it at that until i can think of something else i may need. but i think this sums it up.

So if any of you could be kind enough to throw me some suggestions, tips product model numbers my way it would be greatly appreciated.. i have the htpc now setup and everyone here is itching to be able to use it... so i need to find myself the ultimate htpc remote setup that i can tweak to be simple even for a child to use it. i'm looking for something in the $150 - $300 Dollar Range if it's possible.

Thank you For Your Time And I Hope To Hear Back Soon From All You Professionals Here At AVS.

I'm not sure about all of those requirements, but for a good many of them I'd suggest looking at one of the higher end Logitech Harmony remotes, maybe the Harmony One. I've just picked up one of the older ones and am extremely impressed with it's ease of programming, ability to do Macros to switch between functions (e.g.Watching TV vs. Playing the Radio vs. HTPC). I can only imagine the higher end remotes are just that much better.

ericbsmith thank you for your reply.. yeah ive read into them.. but reason i posted this was because i need some advice on those using them and that they can confirm some\\most of these requests will work, and also i really need to know which software\\ir\
f reciever to go with. i have a feeling that most replies will be suggesting harmony as well. but i cant afford to keep buying and returning this stuff, and i really need to find a solution asap for the family,so hoping i can get some more replies, suggestions tips ideas?

Thanks again Eric for the tips on programming, ability to do Macros to switch between functions (e.g.Watching TV vs. Playing the Radio vs. HTPC)
Much Appreciated

The Harmony remotes work with standard HTPC IR Receivers, including the Imon ones like you (and I) have. And as I said, they're extremely programmable, and include several buttons which you can assign any button controls to - the buttons on either side of the LCD screen on several of the models can be programmed for different keys with your own button labels displayed on the LCD screen.

The macros for switching function are extremely nice, and are automatically set up by the software you install on your computer. You select which devices are used for a particular use and what inputs they need to be in and the remote automatically builds the macro list to change over to that setup. I'm not sure how many different Activity macros can be set up, but have a feeling it's a lot. They are listed on the LCD screen, and you can keep scrolling through the list to go to the function you want to use.

I own a harmony one and it's a great unit. Far supperior to my old (and more expensive) pronto. The activities button is great and the amount of componets, lighting, and options is terrific. It has the ability to add "soft buttons" that can contain any macro you want but only 6 or 8 on the small display box at a time. I would probabbly suggest the higher end Harmony 1100 I think it is and be done with it. I think newegg had them under 400.00 and that would give you even more options, soft keys, and that ultra cool touchscreen display you want. I can not be certain on the HTPC portion because my build will be starting Feb. 1st but I am extremelly interested in the responses here because I'll be going with a Thermaltake DH104 case and like I stated previously already have the Harmony One. I was hoping the Harmony and a DiNuvo edge would be the perfect complimant to my system.

ps I don't have my lights automated but do know the H one has this capability and have heard the remote recommended numerous times for HTPC duty.

I'll be watching very closely this thread and good luck. Let us know what worked and what didn't after you find the perfect compromise, Thanks.

Gyration remotes
and
Google remote/Niveus remotes are the best around!
full Media Center RF,mouse and IR component learning support.

ipods and zunes are good also.

but if your going to control IR STB's... then a IR remote with "emitters" is a must...Imon/MCE blaster with harmony remotes etc.

Another vote for the Harmony. No mouse/keyboard function but does everything else excellent. If Logitech got with Gyration they could make the ultimate HTPC remote...
