607 vs 807, 807 vs 1007

I have no or minimal knowledge in this area, so please forgive me for asking basic questions.

Onkyo 807 has more power and functions than 607, but how about decoding capability. Is there any difference in decoding capability between Onkyo 607 and 807 or are they equal in terms of decoding capability?

I do not care about ancillary functions such as video upscaling as I have DVDO Edge and networking is also not an issue....

If the decoding capability of the two receiver is same, can I just use power amp with 607? Such combination could be superior to 807 or 1007 or 3007 in terms of decoding plus power?

Or, there is fundamental or not negligible difference between 607 and 807 or higher versions that cannot be made up by just adding power amp such as Emovita XPA5 or 7?

Lack of pre-outs on the 607 make that plan a no-go.

Also, both are using different versions of Audyssey. With the 807 being much better than the 607. I always buy a receiver that at least has pre-outs in case I want to add an another amp to it. No sense in buying one without this capability and handcuffing yourself with a receiver that doesn't have enough power to drive the setup you have or may even go to.

Is there a reason you skipped the 707 in this comparison? They are much closer in capabilities and features than the 607/807?

Thank you. I noticed that after I posted my question. Question should be comparison between 707 and 807 (or higer one).

No big reason. Just thought that 607 is more affordable, and a guy at shop told me that I should not consider any thing below Onkyo 607. Now without pre-out, it is not an option any more. Sorry, I should have done my homework before asking around.... question should be 707 vs. 807.

I fully agree with you. Must consider from 707... Thank you.

This is just my opinion, but I've owned both the 607, and now have the 807. If you have small bookshelf speakers or have a limited budget, the 607 should be fine. I have Paradigm Monitor 9 5.1 package, and I didn't like the sound of the 607 with these speakers, especially with music. I then bought the 807 and compared it side-by-side with 607. There is a definite difference in sound quality between them. My speakers sounded more "alive" and open. The 607 got loud enough, but for some reason it didn't sound right with my speakers. Onkyo may have put better DAC's and other components in the 807 to make it sound better.

Also if you look at the 707, it is closer to the 607. The Onkyo HT-RC180 looks to be basically the same as the 807, except for a few features. And it's cheaper. So I would look at it too. Go with something that has at least Audyssey MultEQ. The 2EQ in the 607 was not very good. Bass was very boomy.
