Why finish my theater when I can plan someone else's room.

Ok, why would I want to finished my theater when I can spend time planning someone else's room??? Can you say procrastination???

Ok, so he is a good friend.

Room is fully finished basement with all the standard options. Pole right where you don't want it. Beam that hangs down a bit to low. Standard 8 foot ceiling.

On the plus side:

The basement has a nice office with a window.
It has a 3/4 bath on the proper side of the house (in my opinion... the side without windows).
It is a walkout.

Some quick disclaimers.

1. Yes, we realize the pole could be moved but I doubt he will go in that direction.
2. He wants a pool table which is what is moving the media area to the area listed in the pic.
3. He doesn't need a theater. (He as a friend with one ) Just like I don't need a cottage on a lake.

So without further adieu here is the floor plan...

His TV area is currently where the future pool table is listed with the TV pushed into the little bump out on the right.

That little box in the middle of the room is the support pole.

He was originally planing one of the following. Unfortunately, either put the seating a bit close to the screen. He also wants the ability for the family to play a little Wii on occasion.

I then thought by reversing the arrangement, the TV could be pushed back. We could also build a little half wall to divide the area. We moved the funiture this way today and it makes it a little difficult to get into the area.

After some more thought, I am now thinking of the following. It gives more room between the screen and seating and a more open area.

When I left there this afternoon we left his funiture this way for him to look at if for a while.

Then comes all the wiring issues. With the basement being completely finished running wire will be a challenge.

So what else should we be considering?

He likes watching TV in complete darkness so lighting not too much of an issues.

He wants to run a separate zone of speakers upstairs to the main floor. He is thinking some type of RF remote so he can have one upstairs and one down.

He has a family for 4 so the "L" shaped couch allows seating for the entire family.

I don't see him getting too carried away on equipment. Stardard 5.1 will be sufficient. Screen will probably be 46-50" flat screen.

He is significantly concerned about how the wiring will look. Doesn't want wires hanging everywhere to get the signal around the room.

His home is a 2 story with bedrooms 2 floors away so sound containment not a huge concern. He has been using the area for his TV for several years.

I have been spending all my time in the Dedicated theater area over the last few years so the media room/multi purpose room concerns are a bit new to my thought process.

If he isn't going projection now or in the future, I like plans B and D the best.
