The Avengers - Page 35

Lock it in for 2nd all time domestically after this weekend's haul! 550M minimum. Glad to see the top dog IMAX here was in the DS split category. Only complaint I've heard is just one person not' being able to get into the film' so really that's not a complaint imho. 2nd viewing potentially on 2sday!!

Mark Ruffalo has signed a 4 picture deal with Marvel so this is possible. The other Hulk films are quite different from this one IMO so you will not miss anything if you decide not to watch them. There is really no connection with the Avengers in spite of the end credits tag in the Ed Norton version. Ruffalo brings a whole new feel and look to the Hulk which was sorely needed.

In the film, it's like he's always been there and yet we haven't seen Ruffalo in his own Hulk film and story arc. He's now my favorite Bruce Banner without a doubt. He's funny, sarcastic, he seems 'in control' of his other self and yet quite unpredictable...but not just depressed and boring, which sadly was how I perceived him in the previous film with Norton.

Finally we can have the same David Banner. I hope he has his own film also. Happy to discard the Edward Norton version.

Is that his cousin? I think you meant Bruce Banner.

Was anyone else genuinely sad when Agent Coulson died? I was surprised at how much impact it actually had on my viewing experience. Especially when Fury threw the blood-stained vintage collector cards out on the table. I mean, not 10-15 minutes ago the mention of those same cards were being used for comic relief, and Agent Coulson was a loveable doofus. Ugh, talk about an emotional punch to the gut in the middle of a fun, blockbuster popcorn flick. A testament to the characters and the writing, for sure.

...the dude playing Galaga! I totally thought Stark was just talking out of his rear-end to be funny. It completely threw me off guard when the agent actually pulled up the game and started playing haha... just a brilliant little gag.

I felt the same way and I like his character from the beginning. But..............he's not dead. He will be back in Iron Man 3 apparently. We see him taken by paramedics and unconscious but we never see him "dead". And the fact that Fury makes up the story about the cards shows us that there's something we're not told about Coulson. After all, if he was really dead, maybe Fury who is his friend, out of respect, wouldn't have used him as an excuse to motivate the guys.

Ah...

This made me so sad, and I didn't think about what you said Morpheo. Do you think he'll become the cyborg Avenger guy? I don't know his name. It would be interesting.

In the comic universe, most of the characters' names are alliterative, like Peter Parker, J. Jonah Jameson, Lois Lane, and Bruce Banner. Stan Lee loves alliteration.

That was his name in the TV series (David Bruce Banner), which was changed from his full name in the comics (Robert Bruce Banner). Some of us that grew up on the Bill Bixby version got used to his name being David Banner, and use that name (by habit) sometimes. I've caught myself doing that on occasion.

That was a very nice homage to comic book fans, the kids through the years who admire these heroic characters, even if some might consider it "old fashioned" or corny.

copyright infringement fest? ah come on now... That said, that's amazing for The Avengers. If last week is any indicator, actual numbers could be even higher than 103 millions...

Finally caught this yesterday (2-D), and agree with most: it is quite good, but can't say it's the best (comic) movie ever. It's certainly in my personal top-3. I've yet to see Thor.

And the Hulk indeed steals the show, as Franin first noted; his clashes with Ironman and especially Thor made me giggle like a 12 year-old (his bickering with Stark was spot-on). There was a special Marvel issue yearsssssss ago where the green-guy and hammerman fought, but I never got to read. This more than makes up for that.

If a sequel can be just as good, that'll be nice, but this will be hard to surpass. I don't know much about Joss Whedon, but I'm a believer now! The BD's a definite keeper.

Now, before I die, I'll just need to see my secret-desire-hope come to the big screen: Hulk vs Superman; has the potential to be bigger than anything previous if an agreement could be worked out between studios.

Lol. I still refer to him as David Banner, only to get corrected by my kids.

You've never seen 'Firefly' rezzy?

Only one of the best TV series ever made. Unfortunately, we only got 13 episodes plus a follow-on movie. Easily digestible on shiny disk. Can't recommend it any higher. Even my mother-in-law who shuns science fiction loved it.

And for another bite-sized portion of Joss, try out 'Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog'. It's a scream.

No, and you guys can blame me for its cancellation. I remember watching an ep or 2 when it debuted on FOX, but like many, didn't give it much of a shot (and I believe it featured Summer Glau!) I did watch and like the Serenity movie, though...

I'd love to see it go down too....though I dug the movie and was glad to see it hit #1, but this is Joss Whedon and I'd MUCH MUCH rather see him at #1 than Jame Cameron (whom I am a fan of, but not the same level as I am Whedon's. lol).

What's with the "copyright infringement fest" comment though? I don't get this one. Now, if you're saying that because it has a similar story to other movies....that's not copyright infringement in the least. If it were nearly every movie coming out could be sued for that and we'd have a very limited selection of movies. Script, dialogue, characters are what matters....not if a movie has a similar premise. You can get a million+ different results with the same premise or similar premise using different writers.....directors, etc.

BTW, "The Avenger's is now apart of the exclusive $1 BILLION DOLLAR CLUB at #11 of all time passing "The Dark Knight" with $1.002 Billion dollars! I said for a long time I knew Joss Whedon would have a HUGE movie and possibly a billion dollar movie if given a good mainstream project. It's pretty surreal to see it happen though. Who though has ever had a Billion dollar movie with only their second movie? Nobody, that's who! Woot woot! lol. :P

Not a snowballs chance in Hell of that happening.

Okay.. I saw it yesterday, and must say that I had a good time. But the movie had so many weaknesses that I felt a bit let down after all the hype this movie has generated. The pacing was weak at points, the villains were weak, the opposing forces were not derivative and not menacing enough.

For an extraterrestrial, other-worldly invading force, the aliens were just dumb cannon fodder, and the chinese-lion-dance-costume-esque transport ships were cheesy and too much reminiscent of SFX stinkers like Skyline, and Transformers 2 & 3.

The interactions between Thor and Loki were melodramatic, and at times Loki appears to be an extremely powerful demigod, and at others, a whiny, emo punk with brother and daddy issues.

On the other hand, I absolutely loved how all the superheros got equal footing, and the banter between them was fun.

Seeing the stupendous box-office success of this movie, I am a little sobered to see The Dark Knight overtaken by this, and saddened by some other undeserving stinkers (Alice, Transformers: DoTM (puke!), the Pirates dreck, etc.)

I hope the sequel does better at the story front. I personally would put the first IronMan movie as the best of the Marvel superhero flicks so far, closely followed by this one.

Definitely check out Firefly! I was a huge fan of Joss' knowing his greatness as a writer/director full well after being forced to give Buffy (the series....NOT the movie!) a real chance (Became my all time favorite series by my extreme surprise....though not REALLY forced....more like I'll watch your favorite series if you watch mine kinda deal. lol) and then his spinoff series, Angel, which became a close second.

With Firefly I watched a few episodes when they aired out of order during its first run on Fox (Thanks FOX!!!! ) and missed the rest, but caught up on DVD in the originally intended order and loved it much more that time around. Serenity was a great way to finish the dead series. Much better than nothing!

The copyright line wss tongue in cheek.. Most here said there was no chance of it catching DK before its massive 2nd weekend! My wife and daughters are catching it for the 2nd time(youngest daughter's first viewing , oldest 2nd) tonight without me before I get mt 2nd viewing !! Avatar was a cg fluff ripoff not as bad as the lawsuit known as Disturbia but several flicks infulenced JC, IMHO.

Hey! I quite liked Disturbia! Not sure what movie it ripped off though. Seemed familiar, but can't recall. lol.

Seriously though. It has almost no chance of topping Avatar and I'm pretty optimistic. Avatar had not much competition and had amazing legs. Avengers is showing some pretty good legs, but thus far not as much as Avatar had. Avatar only opened around $70 something million I believe, yet still beat Avengers to a billion dollars worldwide by a small margin. That's because the drops offs were much smaller week to week. Plus, it had more 3D showings to add to its grosses.

I would love to see it pass Avatar, but I think it has lower than a 1% chance, sadly....judging based on me following it per day. But who knows, crazier things have happened.

Not a chance in he!! it will surpass Avatar in B.O.

THE AVENGERS won't do anywheres near what AVATAR did at the BO simply because the ratio of 3D to 2D revenue is only 52%. AVATAR had almost an 80% 3D to 2D ratio. The 3D premium makes a huge difference in the total BO revenue earned.

The biggest one could be yet to come -- the Disney and Marvel Studios' film could match or overtake Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 to become the third biggest grossing movie in history behind Avatar ($2.8 billion) and Titanic ($2.2 billion), both from James Cameron.

On Sunday -- only its 19th day in release -- Avengers hit $1 billion in global ticket sales, matching Avatar and Deathly Hallows 2 in terms of speed.

Quote:
Deathly Hallows 2 grossed $1.32 billion in global ticket sales, and some box office observers believe Avengers is destined to reach $1.35 billion to $1.4 billion. Whatever the case, Avengers is now assured of shortly eclipsing the $1.12 billion earned by Transformers: Dark of the Moon to become the No. 4 grossing title of all time at the worldwide box office.
