It is in my top 5 all-time, and I wish it lasted longer (would've helped if we watched it live, huh?).

Nope. Because they were shown out of order and I believe the time slot was messed with too.

Ok, I'm prob one of the last person on earth to see this great marvel ensemble The Avengers my fav comic book in the late 70s and 3rd highest grossing film of all time. Let's start with the positives so I don't get all the rabid fan boys riled up. 1st: The last 45 min was exhilarating, breathtaking, fun, and very entertaining. The action sequences in that last hour was very well done and executed on such massive scale ok so bravo for that. 2nd: RDJ, Loki, Hulk, and Coulsen were the MVP's and without them this movie would have been mediocre or very bad.

Ok now for blaring negatives that nearly sunk this vessel:

1) black widow, CA, Thor, Hawkeye all were very cheesy and just blah. They're all fine actors but in this film they were fed with some of the hokiest, scripted and wooden lines that made me cringe. I guess playing a superhero is not as easy as it looks or perhaps the director did do a good job of getting the best performance out of them. I can't imagine Verbinski, Wachowski Scott, Sonnefeld, Liman, or Woo not able to extract the best from actors.

2) The 1st hour was unoriginal, bland, useless, and worn out, but the characters are, too. Take Hawkeye and Black Widow for example. What they did they do exactly? CA and Thor were so wooden and stiff it was like their 1st rodeo.

3) Lastly, the movie esp the 1st hour or indoor scenes it looked and felt just like a cable TV movie, just as i thought from the trailers. Didn't have that big budget "film" feel you get from a big action movie. And.1.85:1. Can't emphasize enough on this, every action film should be shot 2.35:1. This also added the tv movie look.

The only characters that were somewhat bearable and worth watching were Iron Man, Loki, andThe Hulk. The rest were obsolete. But overall it's still a very entertaining movie because it finished strong and def worth a view for anyone but this could have been a real golden epic film that is worthy of it's 3rd highest grossing of all time. IMO this was Whedon 1st big action production and he was a bit over his head and could not executed on every level but it's ok. I'm sure he'll learn and the sequel should be more polished.

^ I like the movie and agree on some of your thoughts. Most notibly Hawkeye. I'm not so sure it's how he was written, though, as much as it's how he's portrayed by Renner. Nearly every scene with him is cringe-worthy. CA is wooden, but he was in his movie too. I think it's actually kind of fitting considering he's a little nerd and straight up do-gooder at heart. Black Widow has cringe-worthy moments too, except I give them a pass just to look at that a... Thor, I thought he was actually a little better in this than his movie. He seemed a little tougher. Didn't care for any scene involving Fury's right hand woman. She just seemed like the most miscast person in movie history. I had no issues with the movie seeming cheap or anything, but fully agree about the lack of scope. 2.35:1 would have served it much better. Especially on my scope screen so I wouldn't have to mask the sides.mad.gif

Totally agree, she was really the only one that bothered me, even her gag reel scene was stupid... yes there were some cheese in a few spots with other characters but the pacing, humor, action, visuals, etc. are all just so much fun the minor nit picks are really non-issues for me.

Glad I'm not the only who was irritated by that actress. I would venture to say she is to The Avengers what Sofia Coppola was to Godfather III. To be fair, though, even Meryl Streep would probably have a hard time delivering this, perhaps the worst line of dialogue in recent memory:
"Sir, how does it work now? They've gone their separate ways, some pretty extremely far. We get into a situation like this again, what happens then?"

As those of who know me already know, I am an unabashed Joss Whedon fanboy, which is probably why the very reasonable caveats expressed about The Avengers by Zoey67 and others didn't bother me at all. The sheer spectacle of the thing, along with its good humor made it easy for me to forgive its weaknesses. It wasn't perfect, in fact, despite my Whedon fanboyism, I gave it a vote on IMDb of "only" 9 Stars out of 10, not 10 out of 10. Nevertheless, I have the BD on order from Amazon and can hardly wait for it to get here. Just learned that Amazon hasn't shipped my Avengers BD yet. Since I ordered in on July 3, this doesn't make me very happy.

Ouch. I can honestly say I've never had any problems on any of the multitude of orders I've placed there, the exception being a couple of 1 day late deliveries. Over the course of so many years, that ain't too bad.

Yep, me too. I saw yesterday that the delivery ETA was Thursday so I went to Target and bought a copy and will return the amazon one. First time I've had an issue getting a Tuesday pre-ordered release on time.

That's friggin hilarious biggrin.gif,..given that I waited what 4-5 mos. When it's good, it make the wait all so satisfying. When it's bad like Cabin in the woods you feel completely ripped off.

I get my sliced bread sent to me with free two day shipping. Actually, my bucatini pasta arrived today (via free two day shipping through Prime on less wink.gif).

Let me know when the Shawarma is arriving, and I'll ship myself Prime to your house. Although with your lack of imbibing, I'll probably have to bring my own booze.

I may be getting old but I'm not soft in the head, at last not yet.smile.gif Amazon sent an email at 3:02 AM, CDT, to notify me that my Avengers BD had shipped at last. It is supposed to be here on Monday. That is uncharacteristically slow service for Amazon but I am more relieved that I will be getting it at all than angry over the delay.

I finally saw this film on BD this week and have to agree with what zoey said about the ScarJo character, and even Renner.. but otherwise it was quite a ride in my new 3D setup, some really spectacular visual effects! A blind buy I'm happy with.
