The Avengers - Page 26

Awesome flick. It was probably the biggest crowd I've ever seen for a movie. They were shutting down other movies to add more Avengers screens. This is going to open huge.

Can someone PM me and tell me if I should go see this in 3D or 2D? I thought I read the 3D was basically pointless for this one. I haven't seen it so don't want to read too much in this thread. Thanks.

My 3D experience was great, the theater did a good job on the conversion and it actually looked better than the bad theater I saw Avatar in 3D in.

Box Office Shocker: 'Avengers' Scores $80.5 Million, Second Biggest Friday Opening of All Time
post #755 of 1389
Not really a shocker, given the international buzz about the movie. It's doing extremely well, although it doesn't look like it will break records.
$80.5 million is potential for a $200 million (or close to) opening weekend. That would be record breaking. I think the word of mouth, with the already high fan hype will help catapult this movie into the record book. We'll see on Monday.

Minor spoilers unless you've seen commercials...

I saw it on opening day with my daughter on an IMAX 3D screen. We both loved it and are looking forward to seeing it again. The Hulk was my favorite hero, followed by Captain America. I hope the Vision is in the sequel somehow.

No need for me to repeat the praise already heaped on the film so I'll just say this - I am so happy that I did not watch one preview or trailer to this movie before it came out. Seriously, I didn't even know Loki was in it before it started, nor did I know about Hawkeye or the new Bruce Banner actor.

All that was minor when it comes to spoilers compared to what I saw in the trailers after I got back home. One of them is completely filled with scenes from the last 20 minutes! Why do companies do that in promos? This franchise is big enough not to reveal so much to get people to watch it.

So on that note, I'm also happy I left the theater to get refreshments when the trailers for Dark Knight and Prometheus played. These epic films don't come around often enough and don't last long enough for me to watch even a hint of spoilers.

And that's just domestic; add the $304 million that it has already made in foreign revenue and it looks like 'Avengers' could have a $500 million haul by the end of its first week.

I agree completely and I know the moments you speak of. What I don't understand is the studio's thinking with trailers these days. "Let's show the end of a climax so the tension and suspense is completely gone."

That's just backwards thinking, especially for a movie of this magnitude.

Disney/Marvel refused to pay for the 15/70 prints. That is what I have been told. Ludicrous and pathetic, if true.

We are seeing it in 2D tomorrow, if we can get there before it sells out.

I will get my seat and when the previews start, get up and go into the lobby. Then sit down for the film. I am not going to have DK and Prometheus ruined by overly revealing trailers.

It's already set several records...just depending on which "records" you're referring to. If you're talking about all time gross. Sadly, Avatar is near untouchable for awhile. Nothing is even close to date to Avatar and Titanic. The only two $2 Billion dollar movies. Those two beasts were simply freaks of nature that refuse to lose its legs or sink for awhile.

It may not quite break the all time opening weekend record (however, it will set some kind of record), but Box Office Guru says it looks to be heading towards possibly $180 million over the weekend. If it reaches $169.3 it will hold the new opening weekend record, currently held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II.

For those that saw the movie I need a little assistance, I Googled it and "think" I have the answer but am not sure.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Who was the villian that was shown in the first clip during the credits? I think it is Kang the conqueror but I am not sure.

Thanks

Bet it will be closer to $600 by the end of Sunday. Don't forget about the China & Russia opening that have not been counted yet from what I've read. I'm wondering how much tonight's Mayweather fight will dig into the Avenger's Saturday take.

I remember reading about no 15/70mm IMAX prints, but I just checked my local 15/70mm IMAX and it's showing at it. Yes, it's still a film IMAX. I just called and they confirmed that the IMAX is showing it. How did we up north get it, but ya'll down south not? :S

Unfortunately I was forced to watch trailers for Dark Knight, Spider-Man, and Prometheus before the film. I almost wanted to close my eyes and shut my ears.

Like I said above in the write-up for my viewing, the trick is to not get your snacks or go to the bathroom until the trailers start. As soon as the Batman clip began I left my seat, and when I returned the last trailer was finishing.

On some rare occasions, they only show a trailer or two. Then you're screwed!

Just got back from seeing this amazing film. Seen it at Lowes AMC theater in area with huge screen and stadium seating and great surround sound. The movie was showing in digital and 3d. Each theater has 10 shows lined up for Avengers. One of the best if not best action film I have seen. This will be a reference BD when it comes out for sure.. The action is spread out evenly. The running time (2h 23m) goes by fast, don't miss it!!

Hope we get a Director's Cut on Blu-Ray. I read Whedon's original cut was 3 hours.
Just got back from seeing it. The best time I've had at the movies in a LONG time. The theater was near full, and the audience laughed, cheered, and applauded (including me!). It's funny, it's epic, and it's action packed. All the heroes (and Tony Stark shows he IS a hero) were given good screen time. Pure comic-book greatness.

Same here and I would say pretty much exactly the same thing. Yes, it is a superhero movie so that's pretty much what it is. But Whedon did a great job with it. Intelligent dialog? Check. Humor? Check. Some backhanded stabs at authority? Double check. Whedon had many balls in the air at the same time and yet pulled it off. I enjoyed the banter more than the action. The action was regular stuff but with good direction and good aims rather than just blowing stuff up (though there is a lot of that too).

Nah, I'm good either way. I'm just silly is all.

Not to just continue to echo what everyone is saying, but this movie was incredible. About half way in, I leaned over to the mrs and said this is a day 1 purchase.
Watched it today with my kids and we all had a blast. Forced to watch 3D as 2D was sold out although the 3D was quite good albeit dark initially. Personally my best superhero movie ever, just loved watching those characters I read in my youth brought to life. Way to go Marvel Universe!

Joss has said no director's cut. but the footage will probably be there, as an extra on the disc. He says he's a firm believer that the "director's cut" should be what ends up onscreen, or else there's something very wrong. Can't fault his reasoning.

This should really give our subs and HTs a workout when it comes out on blu.

This was my only gripe about my experience today......I didn't get the Batman trailers or any of that! I got MIB3, Depp's ridiculous looking movie and Tim Burton's even more ridiculous looking movie. I know it's well....ridiculous...but I probably won't go see any of them because I wanted to see TDKR trailer among others.

So impressed with this movie. It showed off all of Whedon's strengths, from his famously zigzagging dialogue to the amazingly deft juggling of multiple characters and clever plot. It's great to finally see Whedon head a big budget movie!

You could say this was the best superhero movie of all time...if you consider that Batman has no super powers...
It's certainly the most fun superhero movie since "Superman the Movie".
