Connect ps3 to macbook pro via ethernet

So my situation is I use ps3 media server to stream movies from macbook pro to ps3 in my school apartment, but for blue rays and anime the wireless connection is to weak and there is stuttering and what not. They have a real fast ethernet connection but we only get one outlet per room, so I cannot connect both the ps3 and computer at the same time via ethernet. So I was wondering if I can connect my macbook straight to the ps3. There's a thread about it on the ps3media server forums here :

I messed around with the last couple posts suggestion but I don't know how to get it to work because the directions are for the xbox:

Don't you have to have a special kind of cable? I can't remember. Anywho you should get a router if you want to pull this off.

yeah it sounds like I might have to, but was wondering if there's a way to do it without one. So I googled and found this:

It's to make your macbook a router itself I think, and then connect your ps3 wirelessly. I dunno if it will make it fast enough for blue ray streaming, but I tried it and couldn't get it to work. I connected my ethernet cable from macbook to outlet, set up file sharing, and it shows up on my ps3 as a viable connection, but when I try to connect to it it says "the attempt to obtain the IP address timed out." So there's another possible solution I can't figure out

I bought a cable 5to do audio video from monoprice.

Ah, it's called a crossover cable.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_crossover_cable

You could always watch the movies directly from the laptop depending on your TV.

Another solution is to buy a wired router like this one. You plug one side (the "WAN" port) into the wall socket and the PS3 and Mac into two of the "LAN" ports. The advantage of this router over the more common wireless ones is that you're not inviting everyone with a laptop in the neighboring rooms to share your connection.

actually crossover cables really aren't needed anymore. Most network devices have auto MDI/MDI-X capability now, meaning Crossover cables (really just ethernet with pins rearranged) are basically obsolete.

Get yourself an Airport Express. Super easy to set up. Took me literally less than 5 minutes.
