You can use anydvd and anydvdhd to do this.

Thank. Seems to do more than I need.
However, the price seems to be in fantasy land.

Are there alternatives?

Well if you don't mind ripping the movie and making an mkv instead of
playing off the disc you can use makemkv...it will remove the hdcp and
the region coding, plus its free.

I'm not aware of any alternatives to anydvd that don't require ripping...but
unfortunately I don't know everything!

The only need I have is to play every so often a DVD (and BD in the future) that comes from Europe. I don't do ripping. Just need a "dual" player.

IMHO, anydvdhd is the way to go then. Unfortunately the Christmas sale is over where a 2yr license price will give you lifetime updates...

But the deal comes back from time to time. Why not download the 30 day version and give it a try.

Good luck!

Why don't you buy a cheap multiregion stand alone player. They sell those for 40 to 50$.

Or if you want one for PC just buy a dvd drive with an external case and change the region for that drive. This should also set you back about $50.

I stand corrected...GREAT IDEA!

I wonder if this an opensource project.
What is really involved for a region free DVD/BD? I guess that the player reads every so often the code from the drive. AnyDVD or DVDRegionKiller would need to react to that and send back a calculated value?
Might slightly more difficult for BD, don't know.
