Recommend Panasonic 42" G15 with all its problems???

My brother is in the market for a 42" plasma HDTV and I recommended the Panasonic G15. Its price is discounted to make room for the newer generation models. 42" is the largest size he can fit in his space.

After reading about all the problems with Panasonic lately (rising black levels, THX problem, power supply problem) should I still recommend this TV to him? If not, what should he get?

Samsung would be the only other brand I would recommend but I have not been following any issues with them so I don't know how they compare against Panasonic's problems.

I would especially like to hear from D-Nice.

Samsungs have buzzing problems, are more prone to image retention, and the blacks aren't quite as good. On the plus side they're supposed to have more accurate color and a slightly sharper picture. Samsungs also have very thin panels and have less phosphor trailing. I'm sure there's much more positives and negatives but this is what I've seen posted about the most, hope this helps.

Thanks.

Just got a call from my brother...he's on his way to the store to try to bargain for a better deal on the G15. I don't normally recommend extended warranties, but it might be a good idea on this one.

I got the 42" Panasonic G15 last month and love it. Granted i haven't had it long enough for any problems to pop up yet but it's easily the best TV i've ever bought.

The G15 does not have a power supply problem so i don't know where you got that from. The only power supply problem Panasonic had was on some of their 2007 models and they extended the factory warranty on these units. None of the 2008 or 2009 Panasonics have any inherent power supply problems, but like all brands there is the occasional failure.

The Rising Black Level defect seems to only have affected a very small number of owners here. Most people aren't having this problem. Mine is 7 months old and is fine.

The THX antique/yellow problem was on units built before August '09 but the newer ones came with the improved firmware. Panasonic released a firmware update to fix the older units that were affected.

Well then you better start reading the various Samsung threads then. If you think Panasonic's have problems, you're going to crap when you start reading all the Samsung complaints!

The Panasonics are widely regarded as the most reliable TV you can buy, and if something does go wrong with it Pansonic's customer service is WAY better than Samsung's is. Samsung is a horrible company. Poor build quality and poor customer service.

He can get a Mack extended warranty from Cleveland Plasma for a low price - they seem to be the most popular EW provider here.

I was reading through some of the complaints here http://www.consumeraffairs.com/home_...ic_lcd_tv.html and here http://community.crutchfield.com/for...px?PageIndex=6 and it sounds like quite a few have the power supply problem even on 2008 models.
These people seem to think it is related to the SC Board which I think is directly related to the "Scan Control Board Damage Reduction" update listed on Panny's techtraining site for 2009 models. I don't see why they would spend time developing and putting out an update if they didn't foresee any problems in a significant number of 2009 models. Hopefully i'm wrong but looking at how they seem to release new tv's with the same problems as the yr before, i'm hesitant to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not trying to diminish any real problems in any way at all but you have to remember this is avsforum. It is going to be the pickiest of the picky and for good reason. I'm one of those people as well. However even though products do get praised on this site for the most part it points out the technilogical flaws is everything. I love this forum but if I got scared off by the talk of any tv in any thread I have been in I still would of never made a purchase to this day.

When I was looking at LCD thread for my dad it was talk of horrible angles, clouding, flashlighting, and a myraid of other problems. When I was in the Kuro thread for my tv it was major buzzing and dead pixels.

If I were you I would have no problem telling your brother to go for it.

Thanks everyone. My brother purchased the G15 last night and I am sure that he will enjoy it a lot (it's not my Pioneer Elite PRO-111FD but then nothing is).

BTW, Randy, I sent him your settings that you posted for your 46" G10 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=4428 and http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=4122) to use as a starting point. If you know of better user settings for the 42" G15, please let me know. Thanks.
